U.S. October Consumer Prices Rise 0.3%; Core Rate Rises 0.2%
By Siobhan Hughes

Washington, Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. consumer prices rose 0.3 percent in October, led by an increase in energy costs that doesn't threaten to spur inflation in the rest of the economy.

The rise in the consumer price index, the most widely followed gauge of U.S. inflation, followed a 0.2 percent increase in September, the Labor Department said. Excluding food and energy, the index rose 0.2 percent, leaving core inflation up 2.2 percent from the past year. Energy prices rose 1.9 percent, the largest increase since April.

The tepid recovery is keeping inflation in check, which may give Federal Reserve policy makers room to keep interest rates at a 41-year low. Companies such as Dell Computer Corp. and Food Lion grocery stores are lowering prices to boost sales.

``We're at a sweet spot when it comes to inflation,'' said Gerald Cohen, an economist at Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York, before the report. ``It's low enough so that it has given the Fed room to ease rates, but it's not so low that you're going to have deflation.''

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News expected the consumer price index to rise 0.3 percent and the index excluding food and energy to rise 0.2 percent, based on the median of 51 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey.

Also ... most today are hitting or beating the street...futures rising from lows.

ff, wrt to a double top, doesn't a classic double top mark at least an intermediate change, if not long-term change, in trend from bullish to bearish, but until key support is broken, a reversal cannot be confirmed.

to date, the trends is short term...approx 1 month.

ff, the rises over the last few days have been on a sector wide basis, not danky on it's own.

Market sentiment is turning round imo. It maybe we have seen the btm.....

(conjecture of course)

but it has been easier over the last couple of months to make a couple of quid than it had been....

i am not really preturbed. the trend is firmly up. DNK has jumped 100% in a few weeks so profit taking should be expected. I am looking towards Q3 and price momentum towards the Q3 results date should be very encouraging.

Cinoib, imo the buyers would have got in at 55p if the offer price was correctly set in the 1st place.

nice...

it's a real shame that the UK spoils the party. They're taking the mick anyhow with the current price.

They are assuming the US is going to open at 3.22 (using 1.58)....

You watch the scramble up if the US opens at or around last nights close.

looks like it. even FF has now given a $7 target, and someone who has good insight on the yahoo board (ivan) has also stated a $7 price target. Obviously profit taking will happen on the way but trend is up.

Pangos, according to stockcharts, the 200dma is $2.98

Also, investtech now predicts a further rise and in case negative reactions there will now be support at $3.00

Short term it's only very slightly over bought (72), however looking back at overbough positions, they have lasted 3 - 5 days with still gains to be made.

As always I'm, forever watchfull....waiting for signals....common sense etc...
