Yum yum - Dairy Crest is a tasty bite both for portfolio and plate, Peel Hunt enthuses. The broker says the Cathedral City maker "has taken sensible measures to improve the structure of its balance sheet" - by repaying £100 million, it is now saving itself £7 million per year in interest. Also, "the increase in cream and butter prices should be helpful", and it is expecting higher profits on the back of that. Shares are 434p just now with a target price of 475p.

Cheese stocks boost pension fund

Former milkmen and workers at Cathedral City maker Dairy Crest are to see their pensions backed with £60 million worth of maturing cheddar cheese under innovative plans to bolster the scheme.

Liverpool stockbroker Panmure Gordon maintained its 'hold' stance on Dairy Crest's shares after today's announcement.

Analysts Damian McNeela and Graham Jones said: "Dairy Crest this morning has announced that it has deployed some of the cash raised from the sale of St Hubert to agree a revised capital structure and new pension contributions.

"We believe that these are both sensible in that it reduces the company's interest costs, improves dividend cover, whilst also retaining the flexibility to make bolt-on acquisitions in the UK.
