With Costain H1 results on Wed 25th August (in 2 weeks time). Hope to start seeing a rise now into results and beyond. PE ratio of 6.7 is lowest of all 17 companies in the construction and engineering market.SP wise need to start to move into 60s and then 70s, and finally break 80p resistance.Analysts have 20.1m GBP average for 21 and 24.2m for 22. Five brokers covering - four strong buy and one hold.I am in for a few more and have added 10k to my pension.

If it creates business for Costain it’s good. Maybe Highways will trial feeding stations for cart horses along major routes..

Is your thinking perhaps stuck in 1953?

It's about carbon emissions and fossil fuel burning, global warming and environmental catastrophe. How else do we, globally, cut emissions? It might be a goer, it might not, but it needs some fundamental rethinking of distribution of goods to deliver - and this might be a way of using existing infrastructure.

One thing is for certain - the world needs to change its emissions profile, both current and future. If you're denying that, then you're beyond help.

Meantime, the share price is not doing too badly...

This is reinventing the train. In my opinion, more green madness. Get back to building stuff.

It does actually sound feasible on a practical level. Certainly worth exploring and a good prospect for Costain both in a consultation capacity and future delivery. Potentially a big earner over some years for those involved in the installation. Meanwhile let’s hope to get t’other side of 60p and heading for 70p before long.

This is the main issue behind the recent motorway charging thing Costain announced recently - quite a prospect (for future income - at consulting margins...) if it is approved:

The “slow lane” on motorways could be converted so that lorries can switch from diesel to electricity using overhead power lines, according to a proposal being considered to speed up the decarbonisation of transport.

HGVs would operate like a tram or trolley bus, but would instantly switch to battery power, diesel or other fuels when overtaking or on roads without overhead lines.

The power lines are similar to those used by trams on Manchester’s Metrolink, rather than the high-voltage system used on mainline railways. Cars and other vehicles could continue using the lanes.

It is understood that the Treasury and No 10 are considering a £5.7 billion scheme to adapt some of the country’s busiest freight routes, covering 2,000 miles by 2030. The cost is less than a third of the price of the £18.7 billion Crossrail project, which is more than three years behind schedule.

The project, proposed by the German transport firm, Siemens Mobility, would connect routes radiating from Britain’s main ports, including Dover, Edinburgh, Felixstowe, Glasgow, Grimsby, Hull, Immingham, Liverpool and Port Talbot.

The roads affected in this phase would be the M1, M4, M6, M8, M20, M25, M62, M180 and A14. It would cost £19 billion to convert 9,300 miles of roads by 2040.

Will Wilson, the chief executive of Siemens Mobility, said: “By going further and faster to introduce eHighways, we can slash carbon emissions from HGVs in the UK. Through investing in this proven technology Britain could have electric and hybrid trucks running between our major ports before the end of this decade.”

The company said that it was in “continuing discussions” with government officials and is understood to be willing to invest in the project.

Britain is committed to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, but the deadline for diesel HGVs is 2035 for those under 26 tonnes and 2040 for the rest because of the challenge of developing battery technology capable of powering large vehicles.

The result is that the haulage industry, which produces 18 per cent of all CO2 vehicle emissions, is in danger of delaying Britain’s transition to a net zero economy.

One advantage of the overhead cables is that lorries can recharge their batteries while driving.

Lorries would use a pantograph device mounted on the roof to collect power from above.

etc etc

Having reminded myself of what goes on under the Costain brand, there appears to be a classic old fashioned pot puri of unrelated stuff, from construction, oil and gas to defence, to project management, which these days many companies would consider rationalising by the disposal of cellular bits in order to focus on a more specific offering.
In its current unwieldy state it does look ripe for asset stripping… Melrose would have a field day!
