So why's it going down?

Offer for company considered too low. Schroeders and Aviva will put pressure on them.

Being incurably cynical, I'm wondering if this mystery bidder is just someone wanting to make money by manipulating the price up and down.
only who?

That's exactly what I thought - but didn't want to start off a new round speculation. Oh well - we've done it now!

Ta 2nd.... my opinion is that it is a private equity outfit looking at them. That's based on nothing at all except a guess... and probably an illeducated one at that!

Anyone have any ideas who the new bidder could be?

Why? Any bid would have to be above 850p. I don't think an additional bidder would justify a 20%+ discount to this, quite the opposite.

Think it could drop right back below 700 before the close.

"City sources claimed Charter received the 870p-a-share indicative offer in the middle of last week."

Heavy buying in the morning before the announcement.

well the 840 "offer" wasn't actually made, just indicated it might be made so some scepticism is justified. However, if CHTR are talking to another potential bidder it does suggest a higher offer. After all they rejected Melrose "offer" as inadequate so one assumes any new offer would have to be higher. Many a slip twixt cup and lip probably explains the share price for now.

Thanks for the heads up, S

I wonder why there is a 760ish ceiling on the share price at the moment when an 840 offer has already been lodged and a white knight has appeared this am?

Yes,a bidding war is very much on the cards and 900p is quite feasible.Charter's days are numbered.Melrose figures tomorrow.

That's me gone, I'm taking my 20% gain and running, probably miss out on a bit more upside but not fussed...
