Forgot to mention, I really do hope BT share price has the same meteoric rise as Glencore, below 70p in September 2015 to 390p now. One that got away!!

toon1966 absolutely external factors drive valuations. But how would a China US trade deal affect BT valuation ?????

I'm bored with this. I've never said the 'FTSE 100' drives companies valuations, but external factors do affect the FTSE 100 and thus many components within the FTSE 100.

In the short term, sentiment can drive a share price. Hence, if ftse is up, sentiment goes up and vice versa. Of course long term is all down to company trading.

from a chart point of view, you could look at it as if we are about to enter the 5th wave on the chart starting from 2003 ? (am ever the optimist - that would take us to 700p)

Toon1966 your making the mistake in believing the FTSE100 drives the companies valuation.. Totally wrong. Company valuations drive the FTSE and investors put the valuation on the company.

Toon, that's my point. BT should be immune to political influence to a degree. Its company dynamics that move it.

toon1966 you are wrong certain companies within the FTSE rose as the china US trade deal would be positive for their business.
China US deal doesnt affect more domestic related companies hence they didnt rise.

toon1966 you have to distinguish between economic sentiment, general market sentiment, currency sentiment, company sentiment etc

BT is where it is due to company specifics. As BT turns the corner it will probably outperform the likes of Glencore as markets prices decline.

toon. that's the whole point of these boards, it's good to get varying views just as long as each can accept the others view, yep we can disagree but there's never any need to get too carried away - it's only an internet bb, not life or death :)

gaffer73 - FTSE rose on the China US 'deal' (if it was a deal!) but BT did not, make what you want of that. Up today though.....

Exciting times ahead what will Deutsche Telekom do with their 14% stake when the embargo ends, merge or bid ? Ofcom would wave a deal through knowing Deutsche is a very strong company

I don't think China US trade wars will affect BT, bit of a safe haven if the FTSE drops imo.

Toon. My prices are based upon IMO share price being over sold, sector rotation and better news coming out.
Hopefully some of those play out, I think they will hence my investment but equally valid views may oppose any investment. That's a decision each individual makes and stands by I guess.

I think 225p quite quickly, but to get to next trading range 245-255p will have to be news on asset disposals. But getting paid 7.3% while we wait.

John H - from memory over 80% of the FTSE 100 saw a rise in their share price yesterday, BT was one of the exceptions. My point is even when overall market sentiment is good, namely no 'trade war' between USA/China, fall in sterling, near 50% fall in BT share price (apparently cheap), FSTE at an all time high BT share price continued to fall.

John Henry. Yes its called sector rotation.
We are in the 3rd of the 4 phases IMO.

hamhamham1 - I accept your point on the dividend, though BT's policy has shifted in this area over the last couple of years, so beware nothing is guaranteed. My main issue is what is going to drive this share price growth to 350p?
toon1966

toon1966 there was risers and fallers in the ftse 100 yesterday as there are today.BT outperforming the market today. In recent years commodity stocks have been driven the market higher, certain retailer and banks have underperformed. Its the individual companies outlook, profits etc that will drive the share price not what the other companies share prices are doing.

Toon. Yep i was saying if it recovered 2.5p a week then that would take it to 350p in 15 months and then add an extra 26p in dividends on top. I did read it, what was wrong with that?
