Surging Debt Costs Push U.S. Deficit to $1.27 Trillion in Fiscal Year


The U.S. federal government’s deficit has ballooned to $1.27 trillion in the fiscal year ending in June, driven largely by surging interest payments on the nation’s mounting debt, the Treasury Department recently revealed.

Despite record-high receipts of $466 billion in June, the government still ran a deficit of $66 billion for the month, as Bloomberg reported. While this marked a slight improvement over the same period last year, it underscored the growing strain on public finances.

The average interest rate on government debt climbed to 3.3 percent in June, its highest level since 2008.

Barclays Calls On Starmer’s Government to Lead on Climate Tech

(Bloomberg) -- Among the many pressing problems the UK’s new government needs to address is how to increase financing to companies developing the critical technologies needed for the low-carbon transition.That’s according to Barclays Plc, which on Wednesday published its recommendations for how Kier Starmer’s team can address a crippling “funding challenge” that’s “hindering the ability of growth-stage climate-tech firms to scale at pace.”

Find a solution, and Britain can “leapfrog international markets and become a destination of choice for innovative climate technologies,” the London-based bank said in a statement.“The UK is renowned for its innovation, but there is a missing middle of capital holding back successfully scaling viable realeconomy ideas that can support the transition to net zero,” Daniel Hanna, Barclays’ global head of sustainable finance, said in the statement.

Barclays is one of a number of voices, including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and KKR & Co., to point out a structural flaw in capital markets where companies working on everything from battery storage to green hydrogen are starved of funding.

NEW RUSSIAN ADVANCE THREATENS UKRAINIAN FORCES IN TORETSK FROM NORTHERN DIRECTION

The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are rapidly developing their offensive in the area of Toretsk in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Russian forces continue offensive operations and expand their zone of control in several directions. The recently reported Russian advance is threatening the Ukrainian garrison in Toretsk from another northern direction.

On July 23, several Ukrainian military sources reported sudden Russian advance on the southern flank of the Artyomovsk front. According to preliminary reports, the Russian troops gained control of large areas near the village of Kurdymovka. As a result of Russian attacks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were forced to retreat several kilometers and abandon their positions.

The break through Ukrainian defense near Kurdymovka threatens Ukrainian forces in different areas. Russian forces may continue their offensive to the east towards Chasov Yar or to the south, threatening the Ukrainian garrison in Toretsk from the north.

New Russian offensive may forces the Ukrainian military command to transfer strategically important reinforcement from other areas, for example weakening defense in Chasov Yar.

Meanwhile, the Russian military is advancing in all villages near Toretsk.

Russian assault groups gained a foothold along the Zhitomirska, Kobzar, Shkolna streets in the village of Zalizne.

Russian forces advanced up to 4 kilometers south of Pivdene and two more gob piles came under their control.

Clashes continue in the center of New York, where Russian forces advanced on the streets over the past day.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are transferring reserves to the area in an attempt to repel Russian attacks.
