New home registrations fell by 23% annually in second quarter of 2024

The number of new homes being registered across the UK fell by 23% in the second quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2023, according to an industry body.

Some 29,281 new homes were registered to be built in April to June 2024, down from 37,861 a year earlier, the National House Building Council (NHBC) said.

The NHBC has a 70%-80% share of the UK warranty market.

NHBC chief executive Steve Wood said: “We welcome the new Government’s policy to deliver 1.5 million homes over the next five years, even if our new-build registration numbers show there is a mountain to climb.”

Pound Sterling: Reeve's Inflation-busting Pay Rises to Offer Fresh Tailwinds Against Euro and Dollar

The British Pound might find the Bank of England keeps interest rates elevated for longer as the Government agrees to a round of inflation-busting pay increases.

The Bank of England could still cut interest rates on August 01, but it is increasingly clear it will have to show caution in the subsequent months as the new government commits to inflation-busting pay increases for public sector workers.

Rachel Reeves is preparing to hand millions of public sector workers an above-inflation pay rise and attempt to blame the Conservatives for any tax rises needed to fund it.

This is after independent pay review bodies covering half a million teachers and more than 1.3 million NHS staff recommended a 5.5% increase, significantly more than the 3% budgeted for.

"Reeves may be hoping an MPC interest rate cut before October reduces government-bond yields and debt interest costs. But the more she boosts public spending, the less room the MPC will have to cut interest rates," says Robert Wood, Chief UK Economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

The Bank of England keeps a close eye on pay settlements as they can boost demand in the economy and contribute to higher inflation levels.

If it thinks pay will remain robust, it might be cautious in its approach to cutting interest rates.

Well I think all Labour voters knew what Labour would do when elected and more is to come, but dont worry, I am sure the government will solve the cost £ problem very easily. Increase state pension age raise income tax, NI contributions and VAT. They are already in the process of closing private schools as the VAT will now be charged.... All these newcomers with children will have first choice in schools and dont forget getting bumped down on hospital and doctors and dentists appointments..

Fury erupts over Labour 'amnesty' for 90,000 illegal migrants

The crisis has already got worse since Labour came to power, Mr Cleverly says, with official figures showing nearly 1,500 migrants arrived in the UK on small boats across the Channel in the last week.

“Labour has started the long march back to the European Union, with a migration deal the first thing on the table,” he warns.

“The last thing hardworking Brits need is more migrants.”

Harland & Wolff was too 'risky' for government bailout

Watch live: Oversight of the U.S. Secret Service and the Attempted Assassination of President Donald J. Trump. Kim Cheatle is scheduled to speak before the Oversight committee in Congress in the US House of Representatives

Offering a £200 million bailout to teetering shipbuilder Harland & Wolff Group Holdings PLC (AIM:HARL) came with a "a very substantial risk that taxpayer money would be lost", the government has announced.

Harland & Wolff, operator of the iconic Belfast shipyard that once built the Titanic, was seeking the government as a guarantor in an emergency funding round to stave off collapse.

The government confirmed last Friday that it was not willing to back the loan, throwing the debt-ridden company’s future into doubt.

In a sign of imminent collapse, chief executive John Wood has taken a leave of absence while restructuring expert Russell Downs has joined as interim executive chairman.

Philippines 'to assert our rights' after China sea deal

MANILA - Manila insisted on July 22 it will continue to “assert our rights” over a hotspot South China Sea reef, after reaching a deal with Beijing for resupplying Filipino troops stationed on a grounded warship.

The Philippine foreign ministry also rejected suggestions by China that the “provisional arrangement” announced on July 21 required Manila to give Beijing “prior notification” and verification of deliveries to the BRP Sierra Madre on Second Thomas Shoal.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, including Second Thomas Shoal, which lies about 200km from the western Philippine island of Palawan and more than 1,000km from China’s nearest major landmass, Hainan island.

Ex-Asos chief Nick Beighton joins Shein backlash

The former boss of Asos has joined growing criticism of fast fashion giant Shein in asking whether it should list on the London Stock Exchange.

Nick Beighton, who turned Asos into one of the UK's biggest clothing retailers as chief executive from 2016 to 2021, is the latest industry figure to raise questions about the Singapore-based firm. Shein is reportedly seeking to join the market in a £50 billion float.

'Some of how it is producing garments, the lack of transparency, its renowned opaqueness, makes me very nervous,' he said. 'I think the London Stock Exchange should be the premier place for the best brands, the best industries, and the highest standards.'

High Street retailers are also unhappy because Shein dodges hefty customs duty as it ships direct to online shoppers from China.
