OVER 30 FOREIGN MERCENARIES HAVE BEEN KILLED IN KHARKIV SINCE MAY: RUSSIAN OFFICIAL

Support SouthFront

Over 30 foreign mercenaries have been killed while fighting alongside Kiev forces in the Kharkov region since early May, Yevgeny Lisnyak, deputy head of the regional military-civilian administration, revealed in a briefing on July 18.

“According to data available to the administration’s department of internal affairs, 32 mercenaries have been killed. The bodies of mercenaries are secretly airlifted by helicopters from Kharkov Airport to western Ukraine on a 24-hour basis,” the official said.

Ukrainian helicopters were however never used to evacuate the bodies of slain Ukrainian soldiers from the region, according to Lisnyak.

The Russian military’s Sever Group of Forces launched a limited ground operation in Kharkiv last May in response to a series of Ukrainian attacks that targeted the neighboring Russian region of Belgorod and nearby areas in prior months. The attacks included rocket and drone strikes as well as raids, which were often led by foreign mercenaries.

So far, more than a dozen settlements in Kharkiv have been captured by the Russian military. The success of the ground operation forced the Kiev regime to deploy a large part of its forces, including many foreign mercenaries, to the border region.

The losses of foreign mercenaries in Kharkiv highlight the defeat dealt to Kiev forces in the region. The situation there may get worse for Ukraine as the Russian military could expand its operation in the coming weeks or months.

Pret A Manger: Filter Coffee now 99 pence with out subscription

Pret A Manger is overhauling its £360-a-year subscription in favour of 50% off up to five coffees a day for £10 a month, it has announced.

The sandwich chain said customers could sign up to the revamped Club Pret at a “much more accessible price than the £360 a year people have to pay for the current scheme” from September.

The change means an end to the 20% discount on food for subscribers, with the chain saying it “never really got comfortable” with dual pricing.

Given the majority of its customers were not Club Pret subscribers, its priority now was to focus on better value for everyone, it added.

Barclays: Q2 earnings face a not-so-low hurdle

Q2 earnings face a "not-so-low hurdle" but should manage to clear it, albeit with challenges, Barclays strategists said in a Wednesday note.

Consensus estimates for Q2 earnings per share (EPS) growth stand at 1% for Europe and 10% for the US, reflecting an overall positive outlook despite the softening macroeconomic data.

“Q2 EPS estimates have held up well despite negative growth surprises,” the note states.

The strong Q1 results and positive guidance helped equities reach new highs, but recent economic data has been less favorable, pushing earnings revisions back into negative territory. The slowdown in economic activity over Q2 means that company guidance for the second half and fiscal year 2024 will be more critical than the actual Q2 numbers.

In Europe, margins are expected to contract, especially among cyclicals, while in the US, margins are anticipated to expand, driven by the tech sector.

“As Europe FY24 EPS growth is back end loaded into H2, aided by easy comps vs. H2'23, guidance will likely be more important than the Q2 numbers for stock reaction,” strategists wrote.

Barclays said the second half of the year presents a mix of potential growth and risks. Positive earnings revisions in H1 were driven by better-than-expected macro data and solid Q1 earnings, but recent economic softening could challenge H2 earnings expectations.

“In fact, we have seen EPS revisions turning negative again in most regions most recently, increasing the importance of company guidance,” they continued.

“However, with the rate-cutting cycle getting under way in H2, and burgeoning expectations of a reflationary political scene in the US under a potential Trump administration, we believe investors may look through mixed Q2 earnings, and play the soft landing narrative.”

Still, this is likely to help the US more than Europe, strategists highlighted. Meanwhile, the UK continues seeing upgrades to economic data, prompting Barclays to remain Overweight on that market.

UKRAINE CRISIS 17 JUL, 16:54

NATO preparing for direct confrontation with Russia — Foreign Ministry

According to Anton Mazur, the relevant plans include "increasing the number of armed forces and the number of weapons, their redeployment to the East, increasing military production, developing military transport infrastructure, building strategic reserves, dehumanizing Russians through propaganda and even building POW camps"

VIENNA, July 17. /TASS/. NATO countries and the alliance itself are preparing for a direct conflict with Russia, deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Anton Mazur has said.

"We not only see NATO countries and the alliance itself being drawn into the Ukraine conflict. We also see that preparations for direct confrontation with Russia have already begun," he said at a plenary session of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation.

According to him, the relevant plans include "increasing the number of armed forces and the number of weapons, their redeployment to the East, increasing military production, developing military transport infrastructure, building strategic reserves, dehumanizing Russians through propaganda and even building POW camps."

"Meanwhile, NATO countries, on the one hand, declare their non-participation in the conflict, and on the other hand do everything they can to ‘inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.’ They are climbing the escalation ladder step by step and have already gone from non-lethal means to long-range missiles. Combat airplanes, which were designed as dual-use weapons, are next in line," the diplomat said.
