EssentialInvestor: because imo they would then lose their banking license from the PRA, which would kibosh nearly everything.

Completely agree, returns are poor. And if they continue will the aggressive branch closure programme why would people just not open a revolut or monzo account where customer service is much better on a virtual and telephony level. I think long term this will be an investment bank and credit card business

Apologies if this appears a rather rudimentary question,

but why don't Barc just exit UK retail and commercial banking?.

Yes appreciate it would not be simple, but from a longer term capital

allocation and returns perspective, is there not a strong case for this...

Setting a 5p plus div sends a terrible message in this day and age with business failing and unemployment rising. Banks profiting from others misfortune and rewarding investors is not something to shout about

Keep in mind this is Barclays. With regards to the buy back it's not hard to imagine some special ifs & buts, some sprinkling of magic, a little fairy dust. You know what I mean.

Diku - what bothers me is that when a price is "deemed" to be "low" and they don't buy back it would appear that they expect it to go lower given the market a "heads up"!!

Mainly when expansion of the business would give a lower return. IMO a negative sign.

That is the obvious belief...but the price is low against what benchmark?...the general market/economy?...better use of company money?...tax purposes?...or BOD have no better ideas?...

I've often wondered on what fundamentals a Company uses when buying the shares back? An obvious one is when they deem the price too low, anything else?

Don't think they would be allowed to pay 5p dividend.

"We have today announced a total payout equivalent to 5p per share, comprising a 1p 2020 full year dividend and the intention to initiate a share buyback of up to £700m."

This makes no sense to me - but I'm generally against buybacks even if the share price is deemed to be too low. They should simply give us the 5p and let us decide if we want to reinvest the dividends if the share price is too low. This should be our decision not theirs.

Post 5937...exactly...and those share awards are sold to pay their tax bills...you hear it every time blah blah blah......never understood why share awards if they are paid super remunerations....salary, bonus, private health care, expenses, pension, divis...what more do you want...the whole cake and eat it...

Don’t fall for the buyback nonsense. Managements always favour buybacks rather than giving shareholders dividends. It’s a complete rip off for shareholders. They back buybacks because their restricted stock awards, which vest over several years, do not yield dividends during the vesting period. It’s crass to suggest that shareholders benefit from buybacks - senior management are the only beneficiaries in my view.

Salty.
