Barclays to pay out £1.6bn in bonuses despite profit drop

Barclays is to pay out £1.6bn (€1.85bn) in bonuses and resume shareholder dividends despite revealing that profits almost halved last year as the bank set aside £4.8bn (€5.5bn) to cover loan defaults during the pandemic.

Still paying a bonus for failure

including a £1.4m annual bonus for chief executive Jes Staley despite profit drop ?

So what does Barc have in store for us today ?

The market looks to open pretty much flat and of course everyone has digested the results. Yesterday was a disappointment without a doubt but was it really as bad as the market took it..?

What a disappointing day yesterday was! Most on this board were eagerly awaiting the dividend reinstating announcement and yet we spewed 4.4% whilst the FTSE only lost 1.4%....

Todays another day but I fear that other reporting Banks (with less impressive results than BARC) will drag the sector down yet further and drag us with them! GLA

I wonder how much trading in Barclays shares Barclays investment arm does probably quite a bìt I presume this buy back will be used to support their trading. For example go short sell the shares take the price down close the short go long buy back the shares at a lower price turn the buy back on share price goes up turn of the buy back go short rinse and repeat. Make a good trading profit make some big multi million pound bonus for you and your pals its a shame to waste a good buy back we could just give the shareholders a bigger divi but hows that going to give us a bigger bonus no fun in that.

For what it's worth, I sold all my bank holdings (apart from metro) after the barc results today. After every economic shock (great depression, dot com bubble, financial crisis) the same happens: consumers save (or pay down debts) and companies pay down debts. What does this mean for banks? they sit on a large amount cash, much of it doesn't get lent out, and of the money that they do manage to lend out, they don't make a lot of margin (due to low interest rates). They will struggle to make money. And on that basis, I'm out. Gla

Having read Terry Smith's recent book "Investing for Growth" he makes a strong case for caution with regard to share buybacks. He argues that unless the buyback share price is below the intrinsic value of the Co, then the exercise merely destroys value.

Does anyone know what the share price is with regard to the value of the Company??
