Poundland suffers £642m loss amid sales slump and stiffer competition from rivals like B&M - as bosses hit out at Rachel Reeves' Budget

Popular high street discount retailer Poundland has recorded an annual loss of more than £640million, with bosses blaming soaring costs from recent Budget moves and falling sales.

The group said it was facing a 'higher cost outlook in the UK following the recent Budget', with Chancellor Rachel Reeves having announced a hike to employers' national insurance contributions and a further increase in the minimum wage from next April, which is set to send employee costs surging.

Iran’s Khamenei warns of "bomb" in Iraq and Syria

Shafaq News/ Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned, on Wednesday, of what he described as a "bomb" in Iraq and Syria, stressing that the Axis of Resistance will “encompass” the entire Middle East.

In a speech broadcast by Iranian media, Khamenei described ISIS as a "bomb" meant to destabilize the region, from Iraq to Syria, with the primary aim of undermining the security of Iran.

“Iran will not allow the region's security to be compromised,” Khamenei added, affirming that Iranian forces in Iraq and Syria are present to protect holy sites and prevent instability.

Regarding the situation in Syria, he highlighted Israeli airstrikes "supported by the United States," viewing the US as a participant in the aggression against Syria and its infrastructure's destruction.

“There should be no doubt that what happened in Syria was the result of a joint American-Zionist plot… We have indications that leave no room for doubt about this conclusion,” he clarified.

Concerning Hezbollah and Palestinian factions, Khamenei praised their “resilience against pressure and conspiracies,” stating that “resistance will grow stronger with increased pressure.” He also commended Hezbollah's rising strength, noting their ability to withstand the "blows" directed at them.

Satellite images show Russian forces still at Syrian air base, navy anchored offshore

Syrian rebels Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have rapidly taken control of the whole country in only 11 days, but they are treading cautiously when it comes to the naval and airports under Russian control.

Satellite images released on December 10 show that Russian forces remain in the airbase of Khmeimim and the naval port of Tartus, although many of Russia’s ships have been moved out of harm’s way and are currently anchored some 7-13km offshore, according to different reports.

Councils' SEND deficits ‘could reach absurd levels’

Local authority deficits for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision ‘could easily reach absurd levels’ without widespread reform, a think-tank has warned.

A new report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) found funding for pupils with SEND in England had risen ‘massively’ since 2015 – a 59% rise, totalling £4bn.

Soaring spending means councils’ deficits are estimated to reach £3.4bn this year and could exceed £8bn in 2027 – potentially resulting in ‘widespread’ council bankruptcies, according to the IFS.

Nigel Farage bags billionaire Tory donor

LONDON — Billionaire property developer and political donor Nick Candy is resigning from Britain’s Conservative Party and will join Nigel Farage’s Reform UK as party treasurer.

Candy had been a Tory donor and member since 2009, contributing significant sums of money to the outfit thanks to his property portfolio.

“I am sorry to say there have been too many broken promises and a complete breach of trust with the wealth creators in our country,” Candy said. “Nigel Farage is a close personal friend of mine, and Reform UK represents the future of British politics.”

Kill the Royal Mail deal: Don't sell our postal service on the cheap to buyers with weak credentials,

The National Security & Investment Act is intended to protect British commerce from unwanted intrusion by overseas predators.

There can be few more obvious cases for it to be invoked than that of the £3.6billion bid by the Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky and associates for Royal Mail-owner International Distribution Services.

There are multiple reasons why the Kretinsky bid should be stopped by the Government.

No company taking on some £3billionn of extra leverage, together with the £2billion or so of debt already on its balance sheet, could be expected to service its borrowings and honour union agreements without dismembering the enterprise.

The record of foreign indebted takeovers is depressing. Thames Water is up to its neck in sewage and borrowings.

Asda fell on bad times after a highly leveraged takeover. The swift private equity break-up of aerospace group Cobham has been detrimental to Britain’s defences.

These deals demonstrate how imperilled the Royal Mail would be under private equity-style ownership.

Kretinsky’s past close relations with Moscow, prior to the 2022 war with Ukraine, ought to be cause for pause.

There is an ongoing dispute between the Czech adventurer’s EP Group and a Russian company over a coal contract.

Labour cabinet ministers don't understand why Britain is going into a recession. We have increased taxes, made it harder to employ people, kept fuel prices high, and spent billions of taxpayers' money on net-zero initiatives that will not work.
Labour borrowed 17billion last month, 9billion was to cover debt interest.

UK 'teetering on the brink of RECESSION' after Labour Budget: Fears UK will slip into the red as business confidence slumps

Fears were raised that the UK economy is slipping into the red today as a survey showed business confidence crashing after the Budget.

A report from consultancy firm BDO showed that optimism has plummeted to its lowest level in two years.

Deteriorating Job Market Threatens Pound Sterling Advance in 2025

Demand for permanent staff at UK businesses plunged following Chancellor Rachel Reeves' tax raid on employment. This is a potential red flag against British Pound strength in 2025.

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) says its monthly permanent staff placements index fell to 40.7 in November from 44.1 in October, placing it well below its 54.2 average in the second half of the 2010s.

This represents the largest month-to-month drop since November 2023, taking the balance to a 15-month low.

"The REC survey showed a sharp deterioration in the labour market in November as firms scaled back hiring following the Chancellor's payroll tax hike in the Budget," says Elliott Jordan-Doak, Senior UK Economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.
