Russian money-laundering gang operating in UK

The system was used by Russian-speaking hackers with millions in cryptocurrency which was used to turn cash into assets

A multibillion-pound money-laundering operation run by two Russian millionaires, including one who helped fund Kremlin espionage schemes, has been brought down in an international sting.

As well as UK-based gangs, the network is believed to have helped Russian clients to avoid international sanctions to use the illicit funds to buy property, cyrptocurrency, firearms and drugs.

Up to 70 arrests were made in Britain as part of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) Operation Destabilise, the biggest money-laundering case for a decade, while a further £20m has been seized.

The Russian state used the secretive network to get money to spies based in other countries, and it is also claimed the network was used to move funds from the state-controlled TV network Russian Today to journalists based in the UK.

Trump Proceeds with Sweeping Energy Reforms for ‘Dominance’ Goal

President-elect Donald Trump is unveiling a wide-ranging energy strategy designed to transform the US into a global leader in fossil fuel exports. Central to this vision are plans to accelerate liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, expand oil drilling on federal lands and offshore sites, and remove regulatory barriers to energy production. Additionally, the administration intends to establish a National Energy Council, led by North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, to coordinate these efforts.

The proposed policies reflect a sharp pivot from recent climate-focused initiatives, aiming instead for ‘energy dominance’. However, experts warn that legal, environmental, and market dynamics may temper the ambitions of this approach.

UK services sector ‘close to stalling’ in November after Budget tax rises

survey found forthcoming rises in employers’ national insurance contributions weighed on firms’ appetite to hire new staff.

Growth in the UK’s services sector slowed to its lowest rate in more than a year in November as firms digested a raft of business tax rises in the autumn Budget.

The closely watched S&P Global UK services PMI survey scored 50.8 in November, slowing from 52.0 in October.

It was slightly above the 50.0 reading forecast by a consensus of economists.

Any reading above 50 means a sector is in growth, while a score below this means it is shrinking.

The number of people employed by the sector also dipped for a second consecutive month, with firms citing higher payroll costs

Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: “UK service providers indicated that business activity was close to stalling in November, with growth easing to its slowest for over a year.

“Weaker sales pipelines, cutbacks to new projects and more caution among clients were all cited as having an adverse impact on service sector output.”

He added: “Worries about the impact of policies announced in the autumn Budget, in particular those pushing up employment costs, were widely reported as leading to a gloomier assessment of business investment prospects and the broader UK economic outlook.”

The services sector makes up the majority of the UK economy, and is closely watched by the Bank of England as a gauge of underlying inflation.

The Bank’s policymakers are widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged at 4.75% next month, following two cuts earlier this year.

Philippines: China coast guard blasts water cannon and sideswipes patrol vessel

The Chinese vessels were accused of ‘aggressive actions’ by the Philippine coast guard.

Chinese coast guard vessels, backed by navy ships, fired powerful water cannons and blocked and sideswiped a Philippine patrol vessel on Wednesday in renewed aggression in a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, Philippine officials said.

Three Philippine coast guard and bureau of fisheries vessels were on routine patrol to protect Filipino fishermen at the Scarborough Shoal when several Chinese coast guard and navy ships approached and staged “aggressive actions” after dawn, the Philippine coast guard said.

They honestly believe that taking money off of businesses and spending it on public sector workers and quangos will produce growth. Totally delusional.

Rachel Reeves refuses FOUR times to repeat her 'no more tax rises' promise - as Chancellor opens door to new wave of hikes

Rachel Reeves opened the door to a new wave of tax rises yesterday – just a week after ruling them out.

During exchanges in the Commons, the Chancellor refused to repeat her claim last week that she would not be ‘coming back for more’ tax.

Labour’s Budget in October was the biggest tax-raiser in history, with £40billion of new levies.
