Barclays fined £40m for failure to disclose links to Qatari entities

Hot off the press: Banking group Barclays (BARC.L) has been slapped with a £40m fine this morning by London's top financial regulator. The Financial Conduct Authority said this was due to a failure to disclose certain arrangements with Qatari entities in 2008.

"This follows Barclays’ decision to withdraw its referral of the FCA’s planned action to the Upper Tribunal. The action was based on findings which included that Barclays' conduct in its October 2008 capital raising was reckless and lacked integrity," the FCA said in a release.

The FCA first issued warning notices against Barclays in 2013. The case was paused pending criminal proceedings brought by the Serious Fraud Office. It was restarted following the dismissal of proceedings against Barclays and the acquittal of the other parties.

The FCA published decision notices setting out its case against Barclays in October 2022 and Barclays chose to refer the case to the Upper Tribunal, which is independent from the FCA and hears appeals against enforcement cases. The FCA had previously decided to impose a fine of £50m in total.

Yahoo Finance UK approached Barclays for comment.

More firms to go bust in wake of Budget tax hikes

Britain faces a wave of insolvencies as businesses are hit by higher taxes and soaring costs alongside a prolonged period of elevated interest rates in the wake of the Budget.

In the latest blow to Rachel Reeves, corporate bankruptcy experts warned the number of firms going bust would rise this winter and through next year.

Gordon Thomson, of accountancy firm RSM UK, warned of 'a wave of distress' among business following the Chancellor's national insurance hike and increase in the minimum wage.

John Cullen, insolvency partner at accountants Menzies, added: 'It would be unrealistic to think that corporate insolvencies will go anywhere but up during the course of 2025.'

The CBI will today warn tax rises in the Budget will hit corporate profits – damaging the UK economy in the process.

CBI chief Rain Newton-Smith will say in a speech: 'When you hit profits, you hit competitiveness, you hit investment, you hit growth.'

Labour's Budget tax raid 'puts companies off hiring' as businesses fear they 'can't afford to take a chance'

The Budget measures have made it harder for firms to "take a chance" on new employees, according to Rain Newton-Smith, who runs the Confederation of British Industry, who is set to make a speech on Monday.

Speaking to the CBI's annual conference in London, she will say: "Across the board, in so many sectors, margins are being squeezed and profits are being hit by a tough trading environment that just got tougher.

"And here's the rub, profits aren't just extra money for companies to stuff in a pillowcase. Profits are investment... When you hit profits, you hit competitiveness, you hit investment, you hit growth."

Quad Joint Statement on the IAEA Board of Governors Resolution on Iran

The text of the following statement was released by the Governments of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors’ adoption of a resolution on Iran.

Begin Text

We, the Governments of France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States welcome the IAEA Board of Governors’ adoption of a resolution on Iran. The resolution responds to Iran’s continued failure to provide the IAEA the information and cooperation needed to clarify long outstanding issues relating to undeclared nuclear material detected at multiple locations in Iran.

These issues are central to the Agency’s ability to provide assurance of the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran is legally obligated under its Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Safeguards Agreement to cooperate fully with the IAEA and account for all nuclear material and activities.

In dire straits – the RFA in crisis

"With concerning global issues currently unfolding, the Royal Navy and RFA have been decimated. Both have lost ships and, more importantly, trained professional crews".

"While the top brass try to put a brave face on the situation, it is clear to all that dissatisfaction within the service is widespread. While the public may not always understand the role the RFA and Royal Navy play, they should be concerned"
