How carrier strike deployment is flying the flag for UK trade

With the Royal Navy’s (RN’s) Carrier Strike Group 21 (CSG21) deployment now set to enter its Indo-Pacific-region phase, the UK will be using the activity to strengthen both its military and trade relations with existing allies and potential new partners.

Representing an inaugural operational commitment for the RN’s first of two new aircraft carriers, CSG21 is an eight-month-long undertaking. Lockheed Martin F-35Bs from the Royal Air Force’s 617 Sqn and the US Marine Corps’ (USMC’s) Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211 are embarked aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth, and on 18 June conducted their first strikes from the ship, against Daesh targets in the Middle East.

European nations are pursuing two separate programs to build sixth-generation aircraft and a bevy of advanced systems within the next two decades, but at least one lead Air Force official hopes the efforts will merge.

The Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System, or FCAS, program is about to launch the next phase of its research and development effort this fall, which is around the same time Team Tempest — led by the United Kingdom and including Italy and Sweden — hopes to kick off a new R&D phase.

Both are years away from a flight-ready demonstrator aircraft. In the meantime, the German Air Force chief of staff said he has spoken to his Italian and British counterparts about possibly combining efforts.



IMO I just cannot see how these two projects can progress without some form of collaboration.......

Royal Navy evaluating designs for new Type 83 Destroyer

Glynn Phillips, Group Managing Director Maritime and Land UK at BAE Systems, said at the meeting:

“In terms of starting conceptual options early, we are, along with Navy and Defence, already looking at concept designs for the replacement of the Astute programme. The Navy are going through the concept designs for the Type 83, which will ultimately replace the Type 45.”
