Hard to work out if the defence review is good or bad for BAe; more high tech spending less low tech spending.

Airbus tells French lawmakers there’s no ‘Plan B’ for FCAS
COLOGNE, Germany — Airbus executives said they see no viable “Plan B” for the embattled Future Combat Air System, as Eric Trappier, the CEO of fellow prime contractor Dassault, suggested earlier this month.

Antoine Bouvier, the head of Airbus strategy, mergers and public affairs, and Dirk Hoke, CEO of the aerospace giant’s defense division, testified before the French Senate’s foreign affairs committee on March 17 in an effort calm tensions boiling in the trinational program, known as FCAS (or SCAF in French).

A man who leaked top-secret details about a UK missile system has seen his prison sentence increased after his jail term was seen to be 'unduly lenient'.

Attorney General Michael Ellis has welcomed a decision by appeal judges to almost double a jail term handed to a disgruntled former defence worker who breached the Official Secrets Act.

Appeal judges have now increased the term to eight years.

Digital Phased Arrays: Tomorrow is finally here for this ‘futuristic’ technology

As the personal computer shrinks to fit the size of your wrist, modern defense systems are following a similar trend. Military systems are getting smaller and smaller – think UAVs or nanosats – and going multifunctional.

This means one job can no longer be sacrificed for another – a system can no longer deliver just communications, or just signals intelligence. On smaller platforms, condensing multiple functions into one small, powerful package – like condensing a laptop computer to fit on your wrist – is key.

Hard to imagine that those sort of hypersonic craft are going to be crewed in 2035 or whenever they might be operational. So maybe some of the thermal problems might not be so bad! ICs survive extreme temperatures better than living organisms.

Yes, last flights were I think 1968. It certainly helped with space shuttle design.

I didn't know the Lightning leaked, but the SR71 certainly did until it heated up. apparently it was just accepted, I think the fire risk with JP7 was considered low.

I think skin temp on the X15 reached around 650C, which beats those WW2 stories of frying eggs on tanks in the Western desert!

shalder, was'nt the X15 retired in the late 60's? Part of lessons learnt now I think. The manufacturing techniques and materials used then and now are so different. But, expansion/contraction could still be an issue, the English Electric Lightning was a sieve, until it got up to speed and warm. I believe SR71 was as bad.

It will be interesting to see how some of the other hypersonic issues are addressed. I remember that skin temperatures generated at M5 with the US X-15 program were such that pretty much everything external was burnt to a crisp each flight. I recall seeing some post flight photos of that, so getting to an operational combat aircraft is going to be quite a challenge.

Reaction Engines chases the elusive prospect of a hypersonic fighter jet

A hypersonic propulsion company backed by Rolls-Royce, Boeing and BAE Systems has taken a step closer to developing an engine capable of powering combat jets and other aircraft at speeds of up to Mach 5 following tests of two subsystems vital to the success of the design.

It makes the glacially slow pace of building the Type 26 even more weird, especially as high end ASW is urgently needed now. I hope this will be addressed when we see the detail on future kit.

“In shipbuilding, we will have by the end of this decade 24 frigates as opposed to the 15 today.”
The Royal Navy currently has 13 frigates, it’s safe to assume that the Prime Minister mispoke.
The Integrated Review confirmed plans for new Type 32 Frigates which will be built in addition to the Type 26 and Type 31 Frigates, many had previously suspected that this is part of an intention to bringing the escort fleet up to 24 vessels from its current 19.

MPs have said they are “deeply concerned” at procurement practices in the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).

In a report the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said it had seen examples of “over-specifying capabilities”, a “salami slicing” approach to projects, and a “failure to achieve value for money”.

The comments come as prime minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce plans to modernise the armed forces today (Tuesday 16 March) when the Integrated Review of defence and foreign relations is published.
