Walmart is exploring the possibility of exiting from Asda after the CMA blocked its merger with fellow big four grocer Sainsbury’s.

The American company is mulling a float or sale as private equity firms and other bidders circle as it is looking for a swift exit from the UK. It is looking to exit the UK market and focus on more profitable emerging markets such as India.

Walmart has reportedly been approached by bargain chain B&M. Asda had been reported to be considering a takeover of B&M in 2017. Analysts suggested that a reverse takeover by FTSE 250-listed B&M of Asda would be a more plausible route than an independent listing on the stock market,

City sources said Walmart is exploring a float of Asda which would mark its return to the London Stock Exchange, 20 years after it was delisted.

A trade buyer could be a more likely outcome for the supermarket as grocery margins have historically proved too low for private equity buyers, who will not see a clear exit strategy, although KKR has been identified as an interested party.

Richard Hyman, an independent retail analyst, said ‘The options are quite limited, I’m not sure what the exit is for a private equity buyer as there is not much of a growth story.’

Mmmmmm ... not so sure anymore - read Whitman Howard note on Reasearchtree - according to Stocko there are some profit downgrades coming in - not good for a growth stock.

Exited - will wait to see how develops.

On balance this is a good update. Sales up 12%.

Would obviously preferred a positive LfL in the UK but interesting that margins were up - so they have not been "buying" sales as so many have.

Positive LfL in December and momentum carrying thru into Jan.

Yep - Good.

The like for like sales mask a stock shortage over summer. Provided they can get their act together on that front we should see better lfl in next results. That said markets are terrible at the moment so the drop is exaggerated. I'm thinking of buying in. Missed my target buy price when this shot up earlier in the year. Now back where it started looking cheap. Set for further growth in tough economic climate. Great business!

I don't get this fairly significant daily fall in price over the last week - the company announced good results - the market price was fair with average p/e ratio - what is not to like and prompt such significant fall - to me, it doesn't make sense.

Looks like market didn't like results! - presumably the flat UK L4L sales revenue. Or perhaps just a massive shake and will recover over next day or so....
