Cleo,

I set them manually online.

I don't know about thriving! think I could do a lot better - closed my BUR, VPC & CNE a bit early - 'doh'

Good luck.

cleo,

Well one way is to keep raising the stops as the price rises!

I frequently do that to lock in gains or minimize losses.

All you do is ring the dealer and ask him to raise the stop loss, and tell him your new figure.

How do you manage to set trailing stops? I don't think IG do these? tia (and glad you're thriving!)

sandaval,

Must admit that buying on cfd in the low 70's has worked for me several times in the last few months but I have had to be disciplined about closing once the share price rose into the 80's. On 8:1 gearing it has made up for my (rather static) shareholding and has kept me interested in following the stock.

Currently have 3 positions open (cfd's) plus my core shares. May just leave the cfd positions to run this time, with trailing stops, but will review daily as it depends on the market.

I agree with kojak that fundamentals will win in the end but sometimes an opportunity arises due to a short term trading range which really lends itself to quick profit.

Have done the same thing with a number of other mining and oil stocks - most have worked out ok during 2005.

I guess, like most things, its a question of balance!

sandoval,

On that point, I do agree with you.

AVM have disappointed for some time, in comparison with better "promoted" gold stocks, and I feel their PR is totally lacking, and needs an urgent review!

Point taken but the fact remains that money left in avm for the last year would hardly have beaten a building society. I feel avm has alot of catching up to do.

sandoval,

I prefer growth to dividends personally, and would prefer a company to buy back shares rather than pay a divi, as I can utilise my BATR on growth, but not on dividends.

Kojak78,

"Sooner or later price catches up to fundamentals"

My sentiments exactly!

I've waitied patiently here, and feel that we may be about to be rewarded, nice rise in the POG too!

Kojak, I've been in and out of avm several times in the last 12 months between 70 - 100p, unfortunatly not 13p. Leslie Gold was my first ever share purchase during the Falklands conflict and they paid a lovely dividend as I remember.....now there's an idea.

I think so, too. But the share price has risen just 10%, so there's the possibility of a short term setback. I wouldn't have a problem with buying a tranche today.

In the end I'm glad i don't have to make such decisions, I invest long term. Sooner or later price catches up to fundamentals. I guess I am one of the worst timers, I just can't trade. So why even try?

kojak78: I note your comment in post 748. I take the point and regard you as a sage. However:

I did not buy AVM shares today, as I am already heavily overweight with them. But, for anyone prepared to hold long term, I'll be very surprised if buying today does not prove very rewarding.

bet there are some big gold shorts suffering some real pain now , probably on the phone already for even more leverage to put some more on higher up. cant remember which article i read a while ago but the gist was the powers that be never let gold rise more than $6 in one day if it did there was always a big pullback when it got there , always held true up until today . lets hope we can get thru 85p tomorrow.gold about $12 dollars off highest close yet avm around 23% lower than when gold was there
still have that seller around yet holding us back

this was a bad day for avm, down against the xau 0.5%..

nice that gold manages to gain US$10.. hehe, no capping today? no gold from South Africa, no gold from European Centran Bank vaults?

We could see new highs for the bull market in gold / gold stocks in a few day. Just 10% for the XAU and US$10 for gold..

Avocet needs Taror/Chore feasibility studies released, that could easily *double* the share price as the reserves would be more than doubled.

@sandoval
"back in avm today"? Today?? i would never buy on days as today, could be just the beginning but could be a short term high, too. Where were you when the share price was 70? The highest price I paid ever for Avocet was 74.5.. the lowest was 13.5

I wonder what a POG of $450 will do for AVM - I hope it takes us back to £1 at least.

Fundamentals have been in place for gold to do well for some time but the central banks keep dumping the stuff. Anyway, back in avm today on the assumption oil profits are finding their way back into gold (given up on the US deficit theory).

Peak in Gold futures seems to be doing it for AVM at last. Down but happy to be in for the next ride.
The graph for Merril Lynch Gold and General looks stonking which can only be good for AVM.

This is more like it. Up 2.5p so far today and pog over $440 at the moment. Perhaps a few more buyers are encouraged to get back in. Even OXS has managed to put on 0.75p.

Also +ve in US so far with NEM, GOLD, PAAS & SSRI all up.

Well we are due an Autumn uplift on pm stocks. Bring it on!

Cleo - sorry to hear about your tribulations with BLT. It is a share I always like to hold once it is in an uptrend. Lots of exposure to rising mineral prices and throwing off huge amounts of cash. Problem is knowing when to sell. I am still holding from 659 and also hanging onto XTA. Don't know where this cycle will peak.

All the best.

Why not? The XAU is 97 vs. 87 and the pound is 1.80 vs. 1.85, so we could easily rally to 111 just to mirror the XAU performance.

i know i should'nt temp fate but looking at the chart pattern i cant help but think we could race back up to the 100p mark from here also if we can get thru 85p we will have a nice inverted head and shoulders

Hi Ash,

No, I have not bought into ACU although I believe Hectorp may well have done because he asked the same question on the GFM thread.

Sorry, I cannot find any reference to the share price note on my PC (bit distracted by the test match today!). If I can locate it I will post.

All the best.

Thanks chip; maybe I'll look at OXS again when I feel a little stronger! for some reason I feel very edgy about the market just now. Perhaps it's that the oil situation looks both too good (sp wise) and too bad (lifewise) to be true?

I must have the distinction of being one of the very few to manage to lose money on BLT this year - buying at 738 only to watch it drop to 600 and then selling out just before it recovered! It literally hurts to see the bloody thing up over 8 quid now. Did someone say something about the art of transferring funds from the impatient to the patient? Gotta larf

Chipperford,

Looks like AVM on the up at last, BTW did you get into LSE:ACU?

The Seymour Pearce Buy note had a higher number on it than 110p I thought 130p on AVM am I correct?

Cheers

Ash:)
