27/11/2010 10:39 | 2vdm - just so you know, I am a she, not a he. I don't think there is a right or wrong but big money cannot be made by selling. It's interesting reading people's thoughts on price Monday. Who cares. In a few years the price will be a lot higher.....read the annual report to understand the potential. And then there's the main market move. Seriously folks, do what you want to do but real money cannot be made selling at £6 when there's £25 potential. Traders largely sold last week and they will want to buy back....sell them your shares if you want to but they won't getting mine. S | ![]() smarm
27/11/2010 10:38 | I am thrilled that your faith and fortitude has been rewarded, so far. Will txt further thoughts. Thanks to Yorgi and Dolories (where ever you are) here for all your advice and company too. Looking forward to Monday and beyond - well beyond. | ![]() bongo bwana
27/11/2010 10:18 | Reasons not to buy just yet ! Wait for the successful launch of Hylas 2. LOL Whether you're buying, selling or holding the share price will never be as low as this again.IMO. | ![]() buck581
27/11/2010 10:18 | Useful article from the BBC below. 15 months approx for Hylas 2 takes us to Feb-March 2012. "The UK government put £40m into the Hylas development programme. The payload for Hylas was developed through Esa's Artes telecoms research programme It has a commitment that everyone in Britain should have access to a decent net connection by 2015. That means a minimum of two megabits per second (Mbps). Some three million UK homes currently fall below this standard; and across Europe, there are many millions more who cannot currently get an adequate connection through terrestrial technology. Hylas will be offering up to 10Mbps to its users. "Now that we've got this satellite access, we'll be able to get fast broadband for the first time [in notspots]," the British Science Minister David Willetts said. "There'll be farmers, hotels, houses in the Lake District, in Scotland and parts of Cornwall that haven't been able to get broadband before; but now this satellite will deliver it. That brings them all online and that's something the coalition government is really committed to," he told BBC News. Avanti CEO David Williams said the company had big plans for the future. "Hylas-1 is the first of what will be many satellites," he explained. "We've already got our second satellite under construction at the moment and that launches in about 15 months' time. "That will put more capacity into the UK but also it puts new capacity into new areas in Africa and the Middle East. And then we are planning more satellites for Latin America, India and other parts of Asia." Competition and price In Europe, Avanti faces competition from the long-established Eutelsat space communications company, which is putting up its own net-dedicated Ka-band satellite, delivering 10Mbps through its Tooway service. Eutelsat's KA-Sat is due for launch on a Russian Proton rocket on 20 December. Astrium worked on both Hylas-1 and KA-Sat, and at one stage the two satellites were sitting inside the same Portsmouth cleanroom separated by a few metres.SES, Europe's other major player in the fixed satellite services market, has so far resisted commissioning a KA-band net-dedicated spacecraft. Instead, it has chosen to offer some broadband capability through its fleet of TV-dedicated platforms. The expectation is that all this activity will help drive down the cost of what has traditionally been an expensive way to surf the web. | ![]() 2vdm

27/11/2010 09:38 | sg31- good informative post and I hope newcomers who want to learn read both posts. It's too easy to get excited about an investment and Smarm is partly right in that I now take a more cautious view. I certainly understand his viewpoint as a pro investor. In your example above, I prefer my initial investment back and effectively a "free" investment in a good company. That allows me to invest in other ventures etc. It's just my view and I fully understand yours and Smarms. Good luck and when it gets to £25 we will all be happy. | ![]() 2vdm
27/11/2010 08:59 | BBC article on Hylas launch, (with link to interview with David Williams) "Lift-off from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana occurred at 1539 local time (1839 GMT). The satellite was successfully placed in orbit 34 minutes later. A signal from Hylas was picked up almost immediately at an antenna sited in India. Controllers will now take a number of weeks to position the spacecraft properly in the sky some 36,000km above the equator, and to check out onboard systems." | ![]() naeclue

26/11/2010 22:18 | 2vdm - ah a banker, that explains the caution! This isn't a bit of fun for me, it's my living and I need to be right more often than I'm wrong. I have been in and out of AVN since before the split with Avanti Screenmedia. The most recent hold from 164. It's not been an easy hold and I get angry with some of the rubbish I read on these threads. As for double and sell - I used to think that was the way to make money, then I realised the way to make big money is to add on a double, not sell. VGM, SNR, MML, AVN, ALN, are multi-baggers for me and have contributed to the most amazing few years. So yes, I am enjoying it. I'm happy that Williams thinks the company could be worth £25 and I will eat my hat if it's not higher Monday but it all makes little difference to me.....my profits are safe from launch failure falls and I can now sit back and enjoy what is to come. My only regret is not having the courage to top up again yesterday. S | ![]() smarm
26/11/2010 22:12 | Ok,thanks. I just thought that tracker funds had to buy shares in the Ftse they were tracking, and so how would this square with 2vdm`s view that instis would require large volumes of shares? | blue forever
26/11/2010 22:10 | 2vdm, My view is that if I doubled my investment, I would top slice, end up with zero risk and hopefully see my residual investment double again. I know the point you are making and it is a common strategy.I have even done the same myself but it seems to me it is false logic. If I pick an investment and buy £10,000 of shares which double I now have £20,000 at risk selling £10,000 doesn't remove the risk it only halves it. I would have got my original stake back but if that is all I wanted to acheive why not keep the money in the bank. I bought these over a long period and have an average cost of less than £2.By assessing what I think the company is worth now and potentially in the future I have decided there is more to be made. The only reasons I might sell are Because I need the money. The shares become a disproportionate amount of my portfolio. I think the value proposition has changed. The company fails to reach sales targets. There are a few other reasons to do with tax planning. I think the really big gains come from long term investment, not a popular view these days but one that works with the right company. I know you know all this but I thought it might be worth posting this alternative strategy for the benefit of a few others | ![]() sg31
26/11/2010 22:06 | BF a move to main market would involve having to meet more stringent reporting and regulatory requirements, that are more costly and time sensitive. No specific dilution/placing would be needed for that purpose. Not sure if Mcap would get it in the ftse250 today but by the end of next week if it had a main market listing and a mcap of 700m 30% higher than today it would likely be in the 250. | ![]() keya5000
26/11/2010 22:00 | So does that mean an admission to the main market has to be accompanied by another placing and further dilution? Or is that too simplistic? | blue forever
26/11/2010 21:52 | Could be tricky for the volumes that they would want | ![]() 2vdm
26/11/2010 21:50 | Not sure how this works but if it is the intention of David Williams to move to the main market, will it not be in the interests of the institutions to buy ahead so as to get in at a lower price? | blue forever
26/11/2010 21:45 | Smarm, I am enjoying the moment and hope you are too. As a retired banker who does this for fun, I have a reasonably clear idea how to value this company. That notwithstanding, I don't think that institutional investors will necessarily make an early move and that they will pick their entry point with care over the next few weeks and months. If I'm wrong and they jump fast, then as PIs, we will all gain quickly. It depends on your personal point of view. My view is that if I doubled my investment, I would top slice, end up with zero risk and hopefully see my residual investment double again. Not a bad result. If, as I suspect, that you are more agressive, then either play it in and out and/or hang on for the £25. Best wishes and really hope you get it | ![]() 2vdm
26/11/2010 21:36 | I bet on Monday good surge to say 850 and then the profit takers down to 750 so lots of chances for the spreadbetters to make a nice sum IF they spot the turns. | deadsceptical
26/11/2010 21:30 | sirkevinfoo - the only person who lost money on Meldex is you. Nothing worse than someone who blames someone else. You bought the shares and you didn't sell them. 2dvm - you know mate, sometimes in life you just have to enjoy a moment. You have no idea what the institutions will do. None. Zero. And what does "and FWIW I hope that we can have fun next week (and the months ahead) without losing sight of the long term potential" mean? It is the potential that has the price where it is....and will propel it to where it should be, which is a lot higher than this. Do you know how to value a Company? Do you understand how to take recurring income and discount it into the future...year after year after year after year. Williams knows his numbers and he told you tonight: £25....a cap 4x higher than here. It's exciting. Enjoy the moment. S | ![]() smarm |
