Augean battles through the most challenging year it has faced

exceptional costs of £55.7m mainly from goodwill impairments on its landfill and treatment divisions

Augean said while it expects a "challenging" first half, it believes it will return to profit in the second half.

What was the £55 write off? Writing off the value of holes in the ground?

It's always darkest before the dawn eh!

Bad news has been priced in for a while, since their peers reported less-than-good results earlier in the year.

In for a punt, and happy to hold longer term for the inecitable recovery.

The only catalyst that I can see for this company is a takeover by a larger US peer. However I might still be tempted to make an initial purchase at sub 22p.

After dismal FY results can things get any worse? I doubt it. Its probably just a question of how long the major holders are prepared to wait for a recovery, or willing to accept a bid and take a loss on their original investment.

no surprise that just before an election this proposal was turned down by the councillors...and they could not have delayed it till after the election as it would have been a hot election issue which raises the stakes and will be interesting to read what the inspector says

Northamptonshire County Council is likely to approve the use of a local landfill site to store hundreds of thousands of tonnes of nuclear waste.

Tomorrow, the council's planning committee will respond to the application from waste management firm, Augean.

Buying strengthening, but the 'offer' is still 26% below what directors paid -38p in the Sept 09 Placing.

A Killik buy recommendation lifted waste management group Augean to 33.5p before a close of 28.25p, up 2.25p.

The broker is hopeful-that the company will gain approval from the Northants County Council for storage of low level radioactive waste. The award would be transformational and lead to a substantial re-rating of the business

Council to approve plan to send nuclear waste to landfill

Waste management company Augean is seeking to use a site in the village of King's Cliffe, Northamptonshire, to store up to 250,000 tonnes of radioactive debris a year

Not for SKS that's for sure, unless they pay the asking price - circa 150p.

No bid from Carlyle will arrive

If the likes of Carlyle can bid for SKS, then I do not see the validity of your argument. You would also have to then question the thinking and credibility of the financial institutions with major holdings. Only time will tell.

I would be very surprised if Carlyle or indeed any other financial investor of their ilk would look to bid for AUG given that it is is such a specialized field any any bidder would have to be a SKS/Biffa type entity or someone with industrial background

Further to the IC report, today's Mail reports that brokers Killick, have given 'AUG' a 'buy' rating.

The reason why so many of us bought into AUG(up 8-12% today) when it was thought to be at a low(having dropped further since)appears to be still intact with the IC today naming it as one of several top takeover tgts. Whilst it names One51 as a stumbling block with 18% and well out of the money at current levels, it suggests that a predator could gain a majority stake from just a handful of other major holders willing to sell. The question is, at what price?
