Neither has the Astra share price!

It will take a while for this news to sink in, especially as the mRNA vaccines are clearly inferior in so many ways, but will Pfizer or Moderna or even the US readily admit that?!

Are they though!

This pandemic is NOT over just because of some vaccine! It is here to STAY!

I expect it to last for 2 years!

You heard it here.

This is just the start....it's not even touched the Peak!

Very disappointing rise here considering Astra is essentially saving the world with this vaccine

Expect a rise after the US opens on the vaccine approval. The associated global publicity will drive this higher with profits to be made after the pandemic is declared over and this vaccine or a variant of it is required beyond that maybe annually like the flu jab. mRNA vaccines will be seen to be prohibitively expensive and logistically problematic compared to the Astra Oxford vaccine going forwards. Also the Astra Oxford vaccine gives 100% protection against serious disease/hospitalisation which is not the case for the mRNA vaccines.

Yes, I'm back in there. As much a gradual (and partial) portfolio transition to long term hold as anything else - and buying these is part of that.

I concur, and interestingly those recovery sectors like Banks and travel and leisure are up on the news. I'm still in HSBC btw, thanks for your view

3552 - Plenty...

I've been watching for a long time, both on the way up earlier in the year and on the way down for the past few months. Finally, just now, after seeing the reaction, I have taken the plunge with a first tranche. Likely to be quite a few in due course.

Today's price action could just be a gap close on the opening. It could also be part of a bigger gap close to yesterday's opening. It could also be part of the ongoing hedgie efforts to short it following the acquisition announcement - new shares to be issued often triggers such a price action.

The point is I don't really care - the lower the better. Once it has passed a a certain price point, you know it will be safe to buy because at some point it will be higher. So as it gets cheaper, I can buy more - I really don't care how cheap it gets.

A lot more to say at some point, but too much else going on right now.

(And I was meant to be on holiday this week...)

With a market cap of almost 100bn, it takes a lot to move AZN. The vaccine hardly moves the needle.

Interesting reaction in the share price to this news, don't think it's a case of sell the news, however where is the next catalyst? Agreement for use of the vaccine in the US ? According to the CEO the vaccine will be shipped either today or tomorrow. This is great news for AZN so is the market once again focusing on its proposed purchase of Alexion which was the main driver of pushing down the share price ? Thoughts anybody ?

Beckers2008,

My point re due diligence was that it had better been up to scratch , of course it will have been done , that is different from was it very thorough , there have been a number of takeovers where it was not thorough enough followed by some considerable write offs and expensive court cases .

AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine authorised for emergency supply in the UK

Working with the UK government, first vaccinations to begin early in the New Year

Regulatory interactions continue around the world for next approvals

AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for emergency supply in the UK, with the first doses being released today so that vaccinations may begin early in the New Year.

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has provided authorisation for emergency supply of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca, formerly AZD1222, for the active immunisation of individuals 18 years or older. The authorisation recommends two doses administered with an interval of between four and 12 weeks. This regimen was shown in clinical trials to be safe and effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19, with no severe cases and no hospitalisations more than 14 days after the second dose.

AstraZeneca is working with Public Health England and National Health Service England to support the deployment and roll out of the vaccine in the UK, in line with the MHRA and the UK's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation dosing recommendation. The Company aims to supply millions of doses in the first quarter as part of an agreement with the government to supply up to 100 million doses in total.

Sorry to spoil the party.

Seems Biden is not as excited about the vaccines as one might expect. What has Faucci been telling him?

According to the CEO the Astra Oxford vaccine will prove to be at least as good as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines; on top of that it's 5 times cheaper and easier to distribute.

Skynews:

"Pascal Soriot, chief executive of AstraZeneca, told the Sunday Times: "We think we have figured out the winning formula and how to get efficacy that, after two doses, is up there with everybody else."

Eg from Twitter (apparently this was reported Sunday)

BREAKING—95%—new data from Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine shows 95% efficacy & is “100% effective” in preventing severe illness, says AZ CEO. That’s on par w/ Moderna & Pfizer. No official data yet, but UK said to likely approve in days. HUGE

(Maybe this has already been posted on this thread and I've missed it)

No-one else picking up the rumours that AZN vaccine data is now reportedly giving 95% efficacy? Obviously that would be significant as it would equal Pfizer's utility but with all the cost and easier storage & distribution benefits.
