Its often done to reduce the erratic move in a share price.
People don't think anything if a share moves a few pence, but it means a lot of the share price is 70p rather than 1400p.
Really it is more psychological as the key thing is the relevant to percentage moves against the market cap that counts.

I have held AML shares for a while now and I cannot understand why they would do a reverse stock split and value each share at £15 instead of 75p. Does it not worry anyone else and can anyone explain why they would do this?
