Lots of positive vibes about the semiconductor industry this morning on Bloomberg. Will this feed through to Arc as well?

Branding in a Hidden World

By Ed Sperling -- Electronic News, 7/8/2003

The growing attention being paid to chips comprised of intellectual property from a number of vendors is turning into a branding nightmare, as companies seek to stand out from the pack in a world that extends far beyond their traditional business partners.

In the embedded world branding has always been difficult, particularly to the consumer, because the name that goes on the finished product is what generally gets recognized. While some companies have bucked the trend, most notably Intel with its "Intel Inside" campaign, most others remain anonymous outside of OEMs.

Until now, that hasn't proved to be much of a problem because the universe of potential customers and partners has been limited. But with engineering talent sprouting up in places like India, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan, and time-to-market pressures forcing companies to find partners quickly, the problem has escalated from manageable to severely challenging.

"There are lots of people using our software every day and they don't know it," said Jerry Fiddler, chairman of Wind River. "Ultimately, it would be positive to have consumer awareness. But we're nowhere near there right now."

Fiddler noted that as systems on a chip become more prevalent, partly because of the rising cost of building an ASIC from scratch, the necessity of reaching more customers and partners will grow significantly. He said that requires branding, and in this respect many companies are far more of a disadvantage than Wind River.

"It's a global and a very broad set of customers," said Andy Haines, senior VP of marketing at ARC. "When it comes to makers of processors, USB and Ethernet controllers, the number of companies in this space is fairly narrow. But in software, which is the most populated, it's going to be difficult to gain visibility."

The problem is nowhere near what it was in the dot-com era, in part because there's no stigma about saying exactly what you do in the electronics industry. But overcoming regional preferences and global obscurity remain obstacles for everyone.

Larry Przywara, who runs the third-party partner program at Tensilica, said there are so many different facets of building SOCs that no one company can do it all. But getting into the mainstream of SOC design when the number of companies developing IP is escalating on a global scale is no simple matter.

Moreover, in areas where there are fewer players, sales cycles tend to be longer and after-sale support tends to be high.

"To be able to help customers in system development companies have to pick an area of expertise and work with others," Przywara said. "A lot of it requires established connections at the top levels of companies like Wind River and strong evangelizing of the brand."

Consider the cash hoard versus market value, implications of deferrals not cancellations, reduction of SARS, movements of dollar. Dirty laundry is out in public now, no more nasties, priced in IMHO. Look @ ARK's performance versus 'Baghdad Bounce', how many other techs are today @ all-time low? ARK is no basket case teetering on the edge of Chapter 11.

Out again this morning, had hoped for a small bounce by now, disappointing as always. With Nasdaq at these levels some downside looks probable, end-of-Q window-dressing now finished and we're into US reporting season. Stocks priced for great earnings, any major disappointments and we may sell off fast IMHO. I think yesterday was largely a relief rally on the back of no 04 July terror, funds pushing prices up before the distribution begins.

ARK is an enigma, there's just no momentum, reckon we may see another hefty drop before the buying begins. Then again, they may actually come out with some good news and it could fly, who knows?

but of course when it really comes down to it, we need a step-up in revenues, targets for profits and cash flow

Further purchases of ordinary shares

Following the completion of the Tender Offer, it is possible that,
subject to consideration of the financial position of the Company,
further surplus capital may be returned to shareholders, if the
Directors consider it appropriate. It is reasonably likely that
further market purchases by the Company of ordinary shares for
cancellation would be the method adopted for returning such surplus
capital. Accordingly, it is proposed, subject to shareholder approval,
that the Company be authorised to make further market purchases of
ordinary shares following the implementation of the Tender Offer.

my bet is management must be looking very closely at situation, in wake of recent share buyback at 29p and market cap having dissipated to merely £29m, and presumably still with over £40m cash in bank.

sars now fading, "On 5 July, Taiwan was the last country to be removed from the WHO's list of areas still infected by the virus. "

really theres no excuse for management now, so if they cant pick up the pace strongly from here heads will surely have to roll

SAN JOSE, Calif — A group of USB developers, including Philips and ARC International, are hammering out a board-level interface between USB controllers and physical layer (PHY) chips. The so-called Low Pin Count interface is in a 0.8 version draft and is expected to be complete before the end of the year.

One Sell of 2947 shares in first 2 hours following the p/w, total traded 356,850. 8 MM's on Bid were all previously on the Offer, versus only 1 on Offer now. Hardly a stampede to exit.

Look @ Level 2, check out a candlestick chart for the weeks around April 09 2003 - the date of ARK's last Trading Statement - and the Level 2 MM moves on that day.

Back in this morning after selling previous holding a week ago for trading reasons. It's all about timing ;-)

but i dont know whats new about this, everybody knew revenues were hurt by sars

and if "Turnover has been impacted by the deferral of a number of deals." this could mean revenues might bounce back sharply in following quarters
