29/11/2002 20:30 | Tokyo's market was also boosted by strength in electronics stocks after reports that technology spending was about to revive. Unemployment was back up to record levels of 5.5% in October, from 5.4% the previous month, supporting the Bank of Japan's pessimistic outlook. Production is also shrinking in the world's second-biggest economy. A month-on-month fall of 0.3% in October shocked forecasters who had been expecting a useful rise after exports had risen earlier in the year. Semiconductor manufacturing looks to be a possible exception. Orders for chip-making equipment have doubled, and an industry report predicted an upturn of 5.8% in technology spending next year. This gave a further boost to the chipmakers, which have been riding high on the better economic data from the US. NEC, Japan's largest microchip producer, gained 4%, while computers group Toshiba, which is planning to expand its chip factories, rose 2%. | divina | |
