Abcam: Collins Stewart cuts target to 300p, sell rating maintained.

Broker Daniel Stewart has chosen two companies from each of its primary coverage sectors - financials, healthcare, leisure, materials, metals & mining, oil & gas and software - as its top picks for 2012.
In financials, the broker prefers Close Brothers (LON:CBG) and Standard Chartered (LON:STAN). While the healthcare picks were Abcam (LON:ABC) and Smith & Nephew (LON:SN.).

A few disappointed buyers at 450 that need to be shaken out I suppose. I also hold this as a tech. play, but it is selling a consumable to laboratories, so does depend on the overall level of research spend, which is an early casualty in hard times.
Moats are good and the bigger (wider?) ABC gets the bigger the moat gets.
Still risky I guess - but then BP was safe once.

Shares wouldn't have a clue about Abcam imo. This is one of the best businesses on AIM. It's pricey because its quality - the moat around this business is stronger than any I've seen in a long time. Hold for 20 years. It will either be bought out at 40x earnings or grow to a multibillion ££ company.

I read somewhere that Shares are advising selling ABC. I am hanging on hoping they are wrong> Looking at profits and growth reassures me

Goodness Rich.. a smallcap as your largest holding.
What other large holdings do you have?
My largest are RSW/KENZ/AZN/RDSB at over 5% of portfolio.
ABC is 3.5% (my last purchase looks a bit previous).

abc is my biggest holding and I expect it to remain so.... just stuck my toe into OPE due to a trade article I read on the '2012' thread where the MD expects to turn a profit this year and on the basis of a huge order book there... dyor... GLA

I trust the mgmt here to continue to grow the company hence I only drop in here once in a while. If you want some excitment look at the SEA board - it is all kicking off over there with higher cash and share than the market cap, the CEO having walked and their quarter owned oiley LOGP possibly about to strike black gold in the Irish sea....

The office expansion worldwide and increase in staffing should be working through this year.
Surprised to see no mention of this in the statement (only comments on tight cost control).
Consensus EPS forecast is 14.76p for 2012, 16.88p for 2013 (IC numbers) (bringing the PER based on the current price down to a, more comfortable, 20).
I have taken the view that the Tintins will start to upgrade this stock and that (relative to the market) 345 is a good price (I'm no chartist though) and so have increased my holding to 3% of my portfolio this morning. I think this is far as I am prepared to go with a smallcap stock.

Half Year Trading Update

Abcam plc (AIM: ABC), a global leader in the supply of protein research tools, announces the following trading update ahead of its results for the six months ended 31 December 2011:



Our business is performing well, driven by our strategy of providing a broadening range of high quality products and support to the global protein research community. Revenues for the six months to December 2011 increased by approximately 13.5% compared with the corresponding period in the 2011 financial year.

Furthermore continued tight cost control and some exchange rate benefit has enabled us to improve both gross and operating margins (before the acquisition costs of Ascent Scientific and the amortisation of acquisition related intangible assets).

Our online catalogue grew significantly both in primary antibodies and in our new product areas and comprised 81,818 products at 31 December 2011, an increase of 18.3% on 31 December 2010. In addition, all 477 small molecule products from Ascent Scientific were launched on our catalogue last week under the brand name Abcam Biochemicals.

Consequently the Board is pleased to report that the Company continues on track to meet our profit expectations for the full year.

No need to register - it is on the front page on the website - just wait whilst the ticker tape goes through various one liners and then it pops up.

11 vacancies on the website just now versuses a last reported payroll of c300 so it looks like growth is continuing.

Looking back at previous trading updates at this time of year, these have been 20 Dec 2010, 17 Dec 2009, 21 Jan 2009. It may be that we have to wait until the new year before we get an update.....
