Update from Simon Thompson in the comments of today's article.

"I think the sell off is overdone. STM has delivered the £1m rise in profit I was expecting and EPS will almost double to 3.8p. Strip out net funds of 11.5p a share and the cash adjusted PE ratio is 11. That's low. Also, the CEO is leaving to join a non competing business. The interim CEO knows the business well and the company's pipeline was robust when I last spoke to the CEO. I am positive."

The trading update certainly wasn't in line with Roskill's expectations!

Does anyone have the Finncap brokers notes?

I think the drop was caused by the interview with Paul Scott did with Edward Roskill. He was very bullish about these and expected EPS to be more around 6 pence this year. I'm not really sure their growth is showing in these half year figures. I would want to see a bit more progress before I invest but by then it will probably be too late.

Looking back there has been a "strategic trading update" in 3 of the last 5 years. Two of them the week before Christmas. Might leave it a month and then buy a few more?

Cheers MTB, you too.

I sense PNA may have paused for breath, but hopefully any roadshow the management do can drum up some support as they IMO seem to have some real momentum so am holding on for much much more from that share price

As for STM, up again already, should break 70p IMO at this rate and bodes well that IMO things may be heading in a good direction! let's see. not sure when next update is.....

cheers to all

QS99 & firtashia: As a holder of both STM & PNA I would endorse your comments and wish you well. More tomorrow from PNA I suspect!!

Thanks QS99, agree about PNA & having sold some stuff recently I just fancied adding an extra holding to my portfolio as opposed to adding more here, thats all it was. Good luck with your investments.

Pattern is the same as last time, taken down until its at the 50day MA and almost oversold, then a bounce. Have been watching with a view to topping up, and hovered over the trigger this morning, but was "distracted" by PNA instead.

"Of course he is tipping!!!
No-one really believes his smallprint.
Why else would he publish his thoughts?"

He gets paid by Stockopedia to publish his report's everyday, so I'd guess thats a good reason why he does it. He also covers lots of companies he doesn't have a position in. I'd call his reports analysis not tipping personally.

Hello

Question for holders: after being on an upward trend for 6 halves (albeit at very varying rates) STM did £8.5m of turnover in H2 2014 and then this dropped to £8.3m in H1 2015. What was the reason for the decline in H1? Was H2 last year unusually high for some reason (it was £1.1m higher than H1 of that year)? Market forecasts of £17.7m turnover means STM needs to do £9.4m in H2 this year....

Linked to this, anyone have an answer to my question in post 290 above about the year's EPS forecasts? In each of the last 3 years, admin costs in H2 are a lot higher than H1 and earnings lower so I'm struggling to see how they hit market forecasts of 3.8p EPS for the year (the share count is also higher now given the conversion of the loan notes).

Assuming they do hit their £17.7m revenue figure, then they need to hold admin costs to £7.0m in H2 (vs £6.7m in H1) to achieve the 3.8p EPS forecast (based on a 35% tax rate, which is lower than paid for the past 3 halves). However in each of the last 3 years, H2 opex has been between £0.8m and £1.6m higher in H2 than H1....assuming this year its say £1m higher this year, then EPS comes out as 3p.

What am I missing? Market forecasts look toppy....and based on last years' RNS announcements there wont be any news from STM til March!
Regards,

Adam

Of course he is tipping!!!
No-one really believes his smallprint.
Why else would he publish his thoughts?
And he is hoping to get street cred for getting it right (sometimes).
In any case,
there are other analysts/tipsters who are currently tipping 100p (longer term).
Who knows?
Do it your own way - imo, learn the business or dont gamble at all.
Personally, I'm presently looking for a bit of a temporary fall back to 60, or less, then a new rise to more than 70 before the whole fall/rise thing repeats yet again. Long term? A lot more.
but wtfdik.
best of luck.

"In any case, I categorically do NOT tip shares. All my articles are giving a personal opinion on stocks, and in particular, digging into the Balance Sheet, and other issues that are not reported in other publications."

Paul - I'm a fan but this point this comment you keep making about tips is specious. A tip is providing information on something that is likely to be successful and you provide that sort of info on a daily basis in spades and personally I am grateful for it. Unless you are defining tip in anything other than a common sense fashion (ie semantic or to do with financial regulation)then yes you are tipping shares.

The share price seems to be performing a similar hovering pattern to the previous peak values shown on the 2yr chart above. I do hope its not those naughty mm's trying to suck in a few more punters with tight stops that they can shake out when the fall comes!

...see how profit has grown big % with small increase in turnover..

And that was after noticeable costs for opening 3 new offices on other continents..
Underlying profit was higher....
( and after those costs the % profit was high....making current p/e look a bit low

....and pensions and life sections showing high % growth..

Growth in EPS estimates assume growth doesnt suddenly stop..

...already signed up more IFAs ( ie. Agents) than in 2014..ref. accounts text.....one hopes they obtain sales !

---

Next results will show how they have got on.....in any case...should perhaps be looking/waiting 2-3 years ..not this month..
