02/5/2006 09:01 | Hi Nige...nasty place we live in @the moment.. FORMER world boxing champion Glenn McCrory was recovering yesterday after being beaten to a pulp by 11 thugs in a vicious pub brawl. The 6ft 4in, 14-stone ex-cruiserweight - who sparred with Mike Tyson and fought Lennox Lewis - was having a meal with friends when a doorman asked the yobs to leave. A friend of Glenn's went to see what was going on and was attacked as the louts started to lay into the bouncer. Glenn immediately went to help his mate - but as he held one yob down he was attacked with beer bottles and a metal bar sign by other members of the gang. The 41-year-old, who is now a Sky Sports boxing pundit, said his head ended up "like a melon" after the attack near his home in Newcastle upon Tyne. Former glories ... Glenn McCrory Glenn was taken to hospital for scans after suffering massive bruising to the side of his head, a black eye and a two-and- a-half-inch gash to his face. He was allowed home after six hours of treatment. Glenn, who won the IBF world crown in 1989, said: "It was pretty shocking. They could have seriously injured somebody - or even killed them. "There were about 11 people who were attacking the doorman and my friend had gone to try to do something. "Then I realised he was also getting beaten up. I ran out of the door to help him. "But I was kicked in the head and I was attacked with a bar sign and with bottles. "This gang of lads were on the rampage. They were an absolute bunch of idiots. "I pushed one of them down and when I tried to keep him down there were three others kicking me in the head." Glenn added: "What they were trying to do was fill the bouncer in. Unfortunately for us we got in the way." A Northumbria police spokesman said investigations were continuing into the violence. | 0rient

27/4/2006 20:14 | So the biggest ever match to come in July. Calzaghe tops a bumper card on July 8 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff - which will be initially set up for an audience of 25,000 - in the first defence of his combined titles. | hirschnathan
26/4/2006 15:59 | Cox to make pro U-turn? By Andy Cryer Jamie Cox BOXING: COMMONWEALTH Games gold medallist Jamie Cox is set to turn his back on his Olympic dream after accusing amateur boxing chiefs of going back on their word. The Swindon southpaw had pledged to go for gold in Beijing 2008 on the back of promises of a bumper five-figure package but reveals that extra funding is now in doubt. Cox, who won gold in the 64kg category in March's games in Melbourne, admits he is now seriously considering turning professional and is due to meet with several major promoters, including Frank Warren. ABA chief executive Paul King confirmed yesterday none of England's boxing heroes will get any rise in funding until July but is urging them to stay amateur. It was thought last month's £2.7million funding boost would be enough to keep England's boxing heroes amateur but according to Cox officials are back-tracking on their earlier promises. He said: "I just don't know whether I can trust them any more. They have given me a contract to sign but I am really not sure I want to sign it any more. "They said my funding would go up at the end of April, now they are saying the end of July. Also the sort of money they were talking about at the beginning is nothing like they are offering now. "I am completely mixed up about it all. I want to stay amateur and it has always been my dream to fight in the Olympics but you have to go where the money is at the end of the day. "I don't believe what they are saying at the moment and that makes it hard for me to sign a contract with them. I have started training again and I just want things to be sorted out." According to King, Cox's earnings will rise after the European Championships in July, and then again according to his world ranking. He said: "Our hands are tied. We have the highest regard for Jamie Cox and all the other England fighters but the money is just not there. "We are not taking anything away from his achievements, it is just the Commonwealth Games is not regarded in the same esteem as the Olympics, Worlds and Europeans. "We do not want to lose Jamie. We would be very sorry to lose him because he does have potential. But if he turned pro now he would be selling himself short. The promoters would be getting him on the cheap. "If Jamie goes to Beijing and does well he will be worth a fortune to promoters. Even if he didn't do well in Beijing and then went on to London 2012 and did well, just think what he would be worth." | hirschnathan
26/4/2006 15:59 | Woodhouse's career switch packs a punch FORMER Sheffield United and Rotherham midfielder Curtis Woodhouse is preparing to make a sensational switch from professional football to boxing. Woodhouse, who was United's youngest ever captain, is understood to be on the verge of quitting football to become a professional boxer after securing a three-year contract with top promoter Frank Warren. The 26-year-old is expected to make his debut later this year against an as yet unnamed opponent. Woodhouse has no amateur experience inside the ring but has already told Grimsby Town, who he joined earlier this season, that he will be leaving at the end of the season after impressing trainers at a local gym. Officials at the British Boxing Board of Control paved the way for his remarkable career change when they gave him a clean bill of health following a rigorous medical. Woodhouse became a cult-hero at Bramall Lane after progressing through the ranks to make his first team debut in 1997. He subsequently joined Birmingham in a £1m deal which saw Peter Ndlovu move in the opposite direction before switching to Rotherham. Spells with Peterborough and Hull City followed before his switch to Grimsby in January. Warren's contract represents a risk to the promoter - but will also ensure plenty of publicity. | hirschnathan
26/4/2006 08:21 | Hirsch...I think you will find HBO payments quite low..Showtime just dont have any clout anymore....get busy get busy!!!! Recall that Calzaghe would fight Roy Jones...well here is the news we all expected....get busy get busy!!!! JONES SET FOR ROYAL APPOINTMENT By Derek Bilton Former undisputed light-heavyweight champion Roy Jones is set to fight Prince Badi Ajamu on July 29. Jones, once regarded as the finest boxer in the sport 'pound-for-pound', has lost his last three and at the age of 37 looks to be on the slide. There was talk recently of him meeting undisputed super-middleweight ruler Joe Calzaghe, but instead it looks like he will go in with the 25-2-1 (14) Ajamu. Ajamu is rated at number five by the WBC, and is delighted to get his chance against Jones. The Camden, New Jersey-native said: "Once the American people see me fight Jones, I have no doubts that I'll be fighting for major world title belts." Jones remains a major draw in the US, and the four-weight world champion has beaten top names such as Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Mike McCallum, Virgil Hill, John Ruiz and Antonio Tarver in a distinguished career. No venue has been set for the bout, but Ajamu's promoter Dennis Rider is already excited. "We're excited about Prince Badi getting a shot to fight the great Roy Jones. "The Prince has worked very hard and he's certainly earned this opportunity." | nigelbennn
25/4/2006 22:21 | "HBO is offering $1.5 million for the rights to the Calzaghe fight, which would air on a same-day tape delay from either Cardiff, Wales, or Manchester, England, sources said" Tv revenue seems to be creeping up | hirschnathan |
