Never been able to deal online - Barclays says it's American and they need to deal by phone - put me off before but I need these in the folio - suppose it will stop me selling fast :-)

I haven't delta today but I've never once had a problem dealing with my Halifax account, there seems to be pretty high volume here today, could be something to do with that.

When Trump first mentioned infrastructure spending in his speech 9th November it led to a major breakout here, we are at a new breakout level now. Maybe the large share price increase seen last time would be too much to hope for, but it is a positive for SOM.

Most of the positive breakouts and price increases occur here after results or trading update news, so it is of interest how strong the move was on 9th November.

Looks like good news for SOM from The Donald tonight:

"Infrastructure Stocks Climb as Trump Pledges to Spend 'Big'
by Luke Kawa
‎27‎ ‎February‎ ‎2017‎ ‎15‎:‎58

President Donald Trump breathed some life back into beaten-down stocks that have been seen as benefiting from higher spending on highways and bridges, promising to spend "on infrastructure big."

Construction materials and steel makers are among the best-performing industries on the S&P 500 on Monday, with a basket of infrastructure-linked stocks compiled by Bespoke Investment Group climbing more than 3 percent....

....There is "no choice" but to spend on infrastructure, Trump said in remarks made in Washington before his address to Congress on Tuesday."

chilly - for the 2.5c dividend paid in October I received 1.7p. Based on the exchange rate at the time that means the treaty rate of 15% withholding was applied. This was with HL, and I have a W8-BEN. I can't tell you for sure that the W8 was the cause of getting the treaty rate, or the rate was applied for some other reason. As I say, retirement accounts are the best place for US dividends as they are zero rated for withholding.

Regarding all this talk on the W8-BEN form, I'm with III and it says the following:

Income from Shares that are traded on the LSE will not be covered by a Form W8-BEN and hence will be subject to the deduction of the 30% tax rate at source.

You can find the details by searching III W8-BEN and clicking on the second item down.

So it seems this only applies to US listed companies?

It looks like that's the regular dividend moving up to 40% pay out ratio (from 30% previously) as the 2017 dividend is forecast at 11.4c. They indicated there would be a further special dividend on top of that.

Is that on top of any special dividends they are intending on paying

Full year forecast is 11c (8.8p). 2.5c has already been paid so forecast final dividend will be 8.5c (6.8p) at current FX rate of 1.25

Longshanks - I suspect nominee providers would have a real problem if some customers had filled out the W-8BEN and others hadn't. Also, as I don't think this is well known, if you have a SIPP and other accounts try to put US dividend payers in there. There is no withholding tax at all on retirement accounts, 15% on all others.

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the advice, a W-BEN form is no problemo, I guess my Broker will want it upfront. I like the Spreadbet approach, my account has been inactive for too long....Cheers, tightfist

Yep just use a IG Spreadbet.

All I had to do was download the form from HL's site, which already had my details populated, print and send to their office. Easy. I've also topped up via a spreadbet with IG and that didn't involve any forms.

With TD Investing it wasn't possible to buy SOM until I had filled out the W-8BEN form. But as already mentioned it was a very easy online process and the form is valid for at least 2 years from memory.

The W-8BEN form isn't required to buy shares. It is a means of avoiding US withholding additional tax on dividends. If you are UK resident then it is worthwhile.
