Well there,s a turnup for the books. First of all I called this one wrong! Yes they are in the black which is a real bonus but by their own admission the profits are behind its expectations, and growth is slower than planned because of a revised short-term strategy amid the current economic climate.

Its a hard call to read into what the statement really means. The competition is tough out there and they are not having it all their own way that is for sure. However, I am please that they are still continuing to be prudent in acquiring a small number of clients who are likely to continue to trade in the longer term, rather than be tempted to go for greater volume of more volatile businesses, which could lose them and arm and a leg. Better safe than sorry in this market place.

I have made the decision to hold this stock long term because of my admiration for the prudent management of the company, Though I am dissapointed that the profits did not come in higher that the expections ( I personally thought they would) I admire their reluctance to go for growth at any cost.

Given what I have read in the statement I am unable now to recommend this stock as a "must have" even though I continue to hold. I have always championed this stock but now I see it as one of little downside with plenty of future potential.

I am afraid in this market you cannot state that "we believe we have continued to make significant progress and are in a strong position to maintain that progress in the months to come." You have to deliver exceptional results or you are pushed to one side until you do. Pity really, but that is the reality in this market place.

Of course, I hope I am totally wrong in what I state and that a shrewd investor comes along and scoops up all the overhang. One still has to remember that POT still increased turnover by 65% which in days gone by would have seen their share price double. How times have changed when a 65% increase is viewed as a poor performance.

GRZ: not many retail investors hold POT, so the interims will bring them out and nudge up the share price. But the quantem leap will not be due to retail investors. What we need to see is some institutions take some interest in them for the long term. With so few shares about the MMs will mark the price up to get what little there is to ensure they keep their institution clients happy. Of course if there is a large requirement there will be a share split which could be very favourable.

Lot of if's! however if not this time round then within 12 months something will have to give if their growth continues as the will need to expand further and so need to establish a higher profile in the marketplace. I can see them going for a full listing in the not so near future.

innovation, thanks for the info re post 31.

I was hoping to pick some cheap stock up today, they are holding up well along with DCF and UCF. I take it not many small investors hold POT at the moment.

GZR

Thanks for the info - did not pick up on Ultimate Finance float. "Solid demand" maybe not so surprising - while the market at the moment is indiscrimenate, sherwd investors know that this ill-wind in the market place will pass in the course of time. With £77bn a year up for grabs and so few start-up companies, the odds are in there favour. Take POT for example, huge growth rate in 23 months and when interest rates start to move up POT's profits will dramatically increase automatically.

Well my return on investment is 20% to date and I expect another 20% on top by end of June (interim results). 40% return over a 6 month period is what I call good going. And yet! other than some shrewd fund managers, retailer investors seem to be disinterested in this stock.

I find it so strange that retailer investors follow the herd with all its ups and downs, rather than just choose a company with growth potential that makes profit. Ambient is a case in hand which I just made 40% in a week.

Oh well the price will rise with or with out retailer investors, just seems odd that so few spot the huge potential of this company.

See all of you in June when the horse has bolted I guess.

Abb064 - not quite correct about "no-one appears to be in at present"

Only last month, Peter Webb picked up a near 900,000 share stake, or 8.6%, in the £10 million company for his Eaglet investment trust (EIN). He purchased these at 90p per share. Also, Brian Watson’s Framlington Innovative Growth investment trust (FIT) holds the stock as do some of the funds run by top manager Alfred Stirling.

I guess in the wider picture this stock is still relatively unknown, so you do have the opportunity to be a shrewd investor by buying in. The retail investor will start to nipple at this stock after the interims, and there may be a possibility that an institution may take a large chuck as its share price should exceed their standard entry mark of 100p per share

Ps - nice to think that I regularly pick winners, but I dont. Only last month I picked up Ambient share at 53p, expecting a upturn, but their accounts are so complex, think retailer investors lost the plot. Shrewd investors still buying as I. But this game is not all about quick wins unless you are a total gambler.

JonC - whats your viewpoint on this stock being overlooked by the retail investor whilst some well known shrewd investors are buying up the stock.

Excellant two page report on Citywire by Algernon Craig-Hall about Shrewd Investors buying into Potential Finanace and the reason why. Well the reason is simple really they think its going to make a mint and the shares are going cheap. But you read it anyway. Address if you need it below:

Just finished my charting for the week ahead. I hold these shares so hold a bias opinion, but thought I would share a chart summary anyway.

The chart gives Potential Finance a positive signal from a double bottom formation by a break up through the resistance at 101. Further rise to 108 or more is signaled short term.

The negative to the chart is its poor liquidity (traded 86% of the days, mean 0.52 mill per day) weakens the analysis.

So in summary, the share price has little downside, therefore, any newsflow prior to a set of good results and a major breakout will occur Only lack of regular retail investors is holding this one back. So a chance to buy in, before more shrewd investors jump on board. Why not be there with them at the beginning of the rise for a high return in 12 months or less.

I draw attention to a stock that is enthusiatic about its future and provide reason why this should be so:

Potential Finance Group PLC has seen a year of consistent growth and consistently improving results. Having only been operating for 23 months, they are in a marketplace for sustained growth.

Client numbers have increased by over 75 pct since September 2000,
while funds advanced to clients have virtually doubled, increasing from 5.5 mln
stg to 10.9 mln stg during the same period.

The group reported turnover in the year to end-September rose to 2.13 mln
stg from 656,000 stg while operating profit before interest was 303,000 stg, up from a loss of 754,000 in the previous year.

The pretax loss was 81,000 stg, reduced from a loss of 687,000 while the loss per share was 0.78 pence against a loss in the previous year of 10.68 per share.

The company has also recently agreed 3-year finance package with GE Capital, which will provide a facility of 25 mln stg to cover its expected growth for the foreseeable future.

You can see why they are so enthusiastic, they have a "heads you win - tails you win" business model. Guess thats what GE Capital saw when the provided a facility for 25 min stg to cover the expected growth. Eat you heart out Marconi and the like! Good value for money this one - zero downside - plenty of upside.

As yet still not been picked up by the retail investors, but institutions are quitely building. However, still close to its lowest price so not to late to see a 100% return anytime within the next 24 months.
