08/7/2009 09:42 | Specialist recruitment consultant Michael Page International (MPI) announced a mixed trading update for the second quarter of 2009. The year on year decline in gross profit for the second quarter edged up to 45% compared with 32.3% in the first quarter. However, the absolute level of decline in gross profit compared to the first quarter was, at 11.2 million pounds, a lesser drop than the 23 to 24 million pound drops in the previous two quarters. The firm saw a decline across the board in all geographies and there was a 55% drop in permanent fees and a 25% drop in temporary fees. Operating profit was similar to the first quarter at around 3 million pounds, giving a total of around 6 million pounds for the first half, a dramatic reduction from the 85 million pounds posted in the previous year. Net cash at 30th June 200 9 was in the region of 95 million pounds, benefiting from a 26 million pound refund on overpaid VAT. The company has continued to reduce its headcount as it reacts to the economic conditions. It added: "As we enter the seasonally quieter summer period, we anticipate a challenging third quarter. However, we remain confident that, with our strong balance sheet, leading brand and experienced management team, we can maintain our market presence and continue to gain market share." Broker Seymour Pierce commented: "We are not yet at the turning point in the cycle and there is no sign yet that permanent staffing, which contributes almost 70% of net fee income, and was down by over 50% in the last quarter, is set to recover in the short term." Shares in Michael Page climbed by 9.25p to 234.75p. | chairman2
26/6/2009 19:16 | You're right. Its not as good as it looks at first glance. I only looked at the summary. Pretty (very) poor actually. Think i'm going to have to take a hit on this and move on :( | relishing
26/6/2009 19:07 | I am puzzled by note 5 which shows the number of sales people as 13 at 31/12/08 against 11 at 31/12/07.So they only took on 2 extra sales to manage £8mill sales? I shall also be interested in the explanation of the high current liability figures with trade creditors at £1.147mill and Accruals at £1.113mill and deferred consideration of £1.060mill. With Current assets at £2.656 and Current Liabilities at £4.384mill, I find it hard to see the Balance Sheet in better shape. However I look forward to reading the Annual Report with interest. regards Linhur | linhur
26/6/2009 18:26 | You need to look at the Balance Sheet. Goodwill at £7 million is the main asset. Therefore the shares in my opinion have a negative value of 1-2p. Its going to be a long haul before shareholders see any value. Not to say they will not as the Company has some talented people but the Chairman has spelt out the short to medium term situation which is uncertain. | churchill2
26/6/2009 15:32 | seems very strange that we had a spike in may at nearly 4.75p..when today we have lost HALF THAT VALUE, IN SHARE PRICE, I WOULD NOT CALL THAT PROMISING AT ALL. | 4screws
26/6/2009 09:43 | Debts reduced to not very much, profits down as expected but not by that much. Good cash position. Overall seems a pretty good result given the market circumstances. | relishing
26/6/2009 08:41 | Results are better than I expected. | michaeld
25/6/2009 16:14 | Relishing, If results out tomorrow then expect it to be bad. Friday is always a good day for releasing bad results. Less trading time and a weekend break to ensure that people do not get the opportunity to sell in haste. After brooding over a poor result over the weekend, you might convince yourself that you may as well hang in there. | buggy
25/6/2009 15:46 | Maybe its too close now? | relishing
