thanks for the John Lee Link - I knew he was having an update, didn't realise I'd missed it :-)

Anyway, nice to see he's doubling up.

And this document outlines some interesting facts I thought on the pub trade over the last year. When the conservatives get in in May 6th, this will hopefully be the end of tax rises on beer.

Well I don't think John Lee reads BB's - from memory he phones his broker to get updates.

Like any long term value investor I am sure he gets a few wrong but has the right mentality and research tools to find a greater percentage that he gets right. He has about seven or eight companies in his folio that are also in mine for very much the same reasons so I would be perfectly happy to sit down at a CPUB lunch and swap a few stories with him....Maybe he will join us for the Pub tour...lol

I've read three reports by John Lee re CPUB, I have been very careful with the guy since I bought Dawson and London Scottish after reading his write ups, they all looked A1 but... Anyhow went in well for CPUB, a no brainer.

John Lee

The adage "there's no such thing as a free lunch" proved true with my New Year visit to the Ladbroke Arms – the flagship gastro-pub of the Capital Pub Company, which is quoted on the Alternative Investment Market (Aim). Impressed with the ambience, the food, the activity – and the fact that my host, chief executive Clive Watson, has been steadily increasing his shareholding – I decided to double my stake. This must make it the most expensive pub lunch to be consumed in London in 2010!

Capital Pub – which is trading well and at half its asset value – is typical of many of the established, profitable, undervalued Aim stocks that I have been steadily accumulating.

John Lee in the FT tipped these a few weeks back and said he'd been invited to one of the pubs for lunch with them and would report back - anyone know how often he's featured in the FT?

Never do a sample check on a pay day weekend. My nephew runs a pub in a fairly affluent catchment area but even he will admit that the swing in takings in the week before pay day and the days after is very dramatic. The only saving grace is if he has arranged a major event to pull in extra revenue or a big game on the Sky tv that cannot be easily watched elsewhere.

The other big question mark can be weather. Nasty weather and fewer customers venture out but very warm weather at the wrong time of year and they all fancy a drink. Hot weather in the holiday periods and they leave London and hit the beaches and funspots.

They don't want to sell me any but are willing to buy what I have for 89.28p.

Expect the price to rise by a 1p or 1.5p.

Shall I write the Trading Statement?

Not really a surprise these are soaring imo.

Floated at 160p and they haven't failed to deliver, all that's happened is they had the misfortune of floating just as Northern Rock fell over and so punters lost the appetite for newly floated stocks imo.

Now these have been shunned for so long punters are realising that there is some good value out there imo.

another 60% from here and they'll still only be back up to the float price.

11,000 bought at 91p....the buying continues.

the Havelock tavern looks a more upmarket venue than what Capital pub go for, the price list for wine is more closer matched to a expensive restaurant than a pub/bar with the most expensive £37.50 a bottle. I suppose thats just the going rate these days....

I think the 50K was a buy.

Proquote times it as 11.49am, at that time of day the spread was 81/85.

Reckon there's a decent trading statement not far off - year end March 28 so less than 4 weeks away so any time between now and a couple of weeks into March imo.

Got to be in it to win it as they say :-)

A positive trading update and this could jump 10p. Very little trade and the price rises but then with only 20m shares in issue the free float must be very small? Nice to see blue again today, even the rest of the market is down.

Day 14

Spread narrowed to 86.44p-90p.

Doesn't look like it's going down.

Undoubtedly a sell. The offer price was 85p first thing in the morning.

Although it was stated that it was the last trade of the day, the 50,000 trade was at 11:49 not at the close of play.

Near the end, I was quoted a spread of 86.05p - 90p, a real middle price of 88p but not on 50,000 share transactions.

any comments on the 50,000 trade before close of play @ 84p? a delayed trade meaning a buy or more likely a sell?

OK David,

We'll do the two in East Dulwich and The Florence one day in March.

I'll leave the date until later this month, if I may.

Two pints in each should be sufficient.

Anybody else in South London want to come? It's all on the 37 bus route through Clapham Common

I did say 'soon'. I do not think you have to drink in them all to do the ratings and we can assume the food and drink rating is after you have asked a good sample of the customers for their views and not just your own.

I will certainly join you for a couple in Dulwich and surrounds if you pick a date along with a couple of friends and am sure there will be more..

Unfortunately David,

I've sworn off the drink for six weeks [Will nobody believe me?], this is day 13 (honest).

Whilst I'm off the beer I intend to get around (hopefully) all the pubs. I'll report my findings to this and to the Motley Fool bulletin boards.

When I'm back on the beer, I'll do one pub a week, which will take me more than six months to complete it.

Anybody else like to do the same?

Well done on all fronts.

I see your post has made it to the 'Bestof'list and that is very impressive for a virgin post. How about a full list of all the Pubs in the group that you visit and a league table as it were based on your own headings ? You could have Ambience, Food quality, Friendliness of staff etc and give your own star rating....lol

The CPUB management will be employing you as a secret shopper soon....nice work in a Pub !!

Well, what a good day!

Another two days like that and we could hit 95p.

Another good day on Thursday and we could break through it.

Certainly 100p looks on the cards before the month is out. What do you think? I think we'll see 120p by 31 March.
