There's a sugar shortage!

I'll have to dig out Jim Rogers Hot Commodities and re-read the "The Next Sugar High" Chapter.

Fantastic news for Silver prices too.

Sugar prices made it on the news at 2pm on 909 five live. Said sugar supply is less, demand is higher. Prices could spike upto 30c/pound.

Biofuel Plant Opens in Brazil
Amyris's large-scale demonstration plant will make diesel from sugarcane.



"Rather than licensing its hydrocarbon-producing yeast to another company, Amyris plans to purchase sugar mills and convert them in order to use its microbes to produce fuels and other chemicals."

China's sugar imports in May rose 26% on year to 141,457 metric tons, the General Administration of Customs said.

India's sugar output is forecast to drop about 45% to 14.7 million tonnes in the crop year to September.

I heard a soft commodities broker on Bloomberg yesterday suggesting the weather in Brazil (major exporter of raw cane) will negatively impact crops.
