The vix since start of the year has been showing bullish divergence on the rsi while s and p 500 makes all time highs a correction is due or even worse or a crash is coming i think a correction and recession second half of the year

The only issue with that plan, is the decay, which makes it a rather expensive insurance policy. The only way to play it, I think, is over 2 days or perhaps weekly, and the time zone differences makes that approach tricky, to say the least...

This is a short-term volatility instrument of course, but has anyone taken a medium-term portfolio insurance position during low volatility to hold it over time in anticipation of downward volatility?

It's a risky strategy as it means hoping for a sideways movement in the S&P until volatility returns and there could be a pre-election pump for an economy that can't be propped up forever. Potential economic woes aside, the prospect of either of the two candidates winning is enough to tank the markets at some stage.
