makes me laugh - citi downgrade but raises price target to 310 - err whats that about other than they want to pick up cheap stock themselves?

and cites lack of catalyst for future - don't they know whats happening with nvidia tegra 2 ?????

brokers???

actual report ....................

0955 GMT (Dow Jones) Citigroup downgrades Wolfson Microelectronics (WLF.LN) to hold from buy on valuation. Says the stock has risen 117% over the last twelve months. The brokerage says there is a lack of future catalysts. Meanwhile, says Wolfson has executed well on its goal to refresh its product portfolio and ramp-up production capacity. Continues to see the AudioHub strategy driving solid design-in momentum in '11. Raises the price target to 310p from 300p. Shares down 2% at 290p. (andrea.tryphonides@dowjones.com

see what I mean !!

last 2 announcements were met with share price rise- just needs slightly more optimistic tone from whoever delivers the results -

FLASH: Wolfson Micro downgraded to hold from buy at Citigroup

Probably the reason for todays drop amongst other things.

Would be nice to be blue on results day for a change but I don't think that's happened for a while.

If it tanks tomorrow then maybe.

Last few mini freefalls have been followed by quick reversals though so lets see what happens.

Hardly a mass selloff with less than half a million quids worth traded though so either there's some massive sell orders being worked or its the usual lets hit a few stops games.

Battle of at least 2 Insit's at the moment.

Selling and some buying. Who'll finish first?

Going to hold but if profit taking takes this down

to circa 270p then I might spend a few more pennies.

Fingers crossed for Tuesday.

Hope the CEO sounds a little more excited than the last presentation.

Glyn - I agree

today - pre results nerves - just seems to have have been a few sellers around this week - but Norges bank - (those canny scandanavians) have topped up with nearly another 400,000 - so they clearly they see value..

I just think wlf have disappointed so much in the past at results time and the share has risen so much in the last 6 months that some do not want to be caught again and are banking their gains...

BUT clearly there are some big deals being done and these herald a much brighter future - time for optimism - onwards - buy on the dips

todays news announcement...

Edinburgh, UK, 3 February 2011 - Wolfson Microelectronics plc has today announced the WM229, its latest category-defining ear-bud headset reference solution, the first headset to incorporate Wolfson's WM2002 digital Ambient Noise Cancelling IC. The WM229 delivers Wolfson's unique and multi-patented feed-forward digital myZone™ Ambient Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology and high definition (HD) audio in a mass-market headset.

The WM229 is the latest product in Wolfson's range of ANC headset reference solutions. Combining leading-edge styling and world-class HD audio performance, the WM229 'white label' digital ANC headset is compatible with world-leading consumer electronics products, including mobile phones, and can be quickly and easily customised and branded by consumer electronics manufacturers, to be delivered in-box or sold as an after-market accessory.

Wolfson's unique myZone™ feed-forward ANC technology provides crystal-clear HD audio by eliminating background noise, removing the need for consumers to increase the audio volume to compensate for external noise, providing manufacturers with an ideal solution to prevent hearing damage caused by listening to loud music for extended periods. With three unique user-selectable ANC modes stored in its digital memory, the WM229 enables the user to select the level of ANC depending on the noise in their environment, so they can enjoy their music or focus on their phone calls, eliminating noisy distractions.
........
Kevin Carey, Business Development Manager at Wolfson Microelectronics said: "The introduction of the digital WM229 marks the next step in the evolution of Wolfson's ANC and HD audio journey. The WM229 packages Wolfson's unique digital myZone™ ANC technology and HD audio expertise in a complete reference solution, and delivers a game-changing accessory to complement the next generation of consumer electronics products."

Many customers, including multiple Tier 1s, have sampled and are currently evaluating the headset.

difficult to call; a couple of the nvidia articles mention the profit/loss forecast as above - which seem a little surprising given new product sales of the last quarter - we will have to wait and see actual numbers on tuesday...I am hoping for better

but as ever with wlf - so much depends upon how forecasts for 2011 onwards are presented - and the last 3 quarters have tended to be fairly cautious - but I do see much more optimism for the future - imho tegra 2 is a massive launch pad(excuse pun) for the future - new companies, new products..... will the market agree ?

Key point folks..... views on this on short term share price ?

News of the deal with Nvidia comes ahead of Wolfson's results on Tuesday for the year to 31 December, which are expected to show pre-tax losses widening from $6.7m in 2009 to $9.7m, despite turnover climbing from $121.3m to $156.5m.

The wider losses follow a weak first half and are expected to come despite Wolfson swinging back into the black during its third quarter for the first time in two years.

Tegra 2, which was unveiled last month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, has already been selected by LG for use in its new Optimus 2X smart phone.

Other manufacturers signed up to use the processor include Acer, Dell, Google, Samsung, T-Mobile and Toshiba.

Derek Milne, the company's product marketing manager, told The Scotsman: "It's too early to tell how big a deal this could be for us because the Tegra 2 has just being released.

"But Nvidia is up there at the top of the market so we're delighted with this partnership."

The global smart phone market was worth about $100 billion (£62bn) last year and is expected to rise to about $140bn this year

.... so....this is a whole new entry point for a number of major manufacturers acer, dell,t-mobile, toshiba and its interesting to see wlf is in the new LG optimus 2x widely being pushed as one of the next good smartphones....

WOLFSON Microelectronics has secured a major contract with one of the world's largest microchip manufacturers.

Wolfson's WM8325 power management system has been chosen by NIVIDIA as a partner technology for its Tegra 2 super chips.

The Tegra 2 is being used in the next generation range of smartphones and computing tablets showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Nevada earlier this month.

Wolfson said it was too early to say how much the contract could be worth but expects to report a "significant rise" in design-in work as a result of the contract win.

Its WM8325 power management system is used to maximise the battery life in portable electronic goods, delivering as much as 10 per cent more than its nearest competitor.

Manufacturers already using the Tegra 2 chip include Google, Acer, Toshiba and mobile phone giant T-mobile.

Dr Jess Brown, Wolfsons product line manager for power management, said: "We are delighted that NVIDIA has selected the WM8325 for its highly innovative Tegra 2 processor.

"This announcement is testament to the strength of the WM8325, which delivers class-leading power management technology to next generation multimedia processors.

"The WM8325 improves battery life by up to 10 per cent against our leading competitors and enables the use of smaller and lower cost external components.

"Also, programmability of the device will lead to lower cost of ownership, since the device can be re-used in multiple applications and also supports the next generation of NVIDIA processors."

Michael Rayfield, general manager mobile business at NVIDIA added: "Wolfson provides exceptional power management solutions.

"Teaming their WM8325 product with Tegra 2 helps our partners optimize power and get their super phone or tablet to market faster."

Wolfson reported a return to profit last November with revenues up more than 30 per cent to $47 million on the back of strong demand for its technology for e-book readers, smartphones, tablets and computer and gaming consoles.

The company reported a total of 132 new design-ins -

Wolfson's power management selected for NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2

Posted: 01 Feb 2011 01:00 AM PST

Edinburgh, UK, 1 February 2011 – Wolfson Microelectronics plc today announced that its industry-leading WM8325 power management subsystem, the world's highest current monolithic power management IC (PMIC), has been selected by NVIDIA as a PMIC partner for Tegra 2, the world's first mobile super chip.

With Tegra 2, NVIDIA is unleashing the next wave of super phones and tablets that deliver unprecedented multimedia experiences. Tegra 2 brings extreme multi-tasking with the first mobile dual-core CPU, the best web experience with up to two times faster browsing, hardware accelerated Flash, and console-quality gaming with a GeForce™ GPU.

The WM8325 delivers a cost effective, flexible power management solution for portable multimedia applications including smartbooks, tablet computers, e-books, media players and smartphones. It features four programmable DC-DC converters, including one which is capable of delivering up to 2.5A; and eleven LDO regulators, four of which are low-noise for supplying sensitive analogue subsystems. Its optimised QFN package is designed to improve thermal performance and reduce parasitic components, enabling low cost four-layer printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing.

Dr Jess Brown, Wolfson's Product Line Manager for Power Management, said: "We are delighted that NVIDIA has selected the WM8325 for its highly innovative Tegra 2 processor. This announcement is testament to the strength of the WM8325, which delivers class-leading power management technology to next generation multimedia processors.

"The WM8325 improves battery life by up to 10% against our leading competitors and enables the use of smaller and lower cost external components.
