WALKER GREENBANK PLC

("Walker Greenbank" or the "Company")

Sanderson and Morris & Co sign licensing agreement with NEXT

Walker Greenbank PLC (AIM: WGB), the luxury interior furnishings group, is pleased to announce that its Sanderson, Sanderson Home and Morris & Co brands have signed a licensing agreement with major retailer NEXT for an extensive range of clothing, homeware and accessories for an initial term of two and a half years. This agreement follows the successful collaboration between NEXT and the Company's Scion brand announced earlier this year.

With the Morris & Co brand, NEXT will produce apparel, including womenswear, men's shirts and childrenswear, with an anticipated launch date of June 2021.

With the Sanderson and Sanderson Home brands, NEXT will produce an exciting range of homeware. These products are expected to be launched following the Morris & Co apparel launch.

All of the products under the licensing agreement are expected to become available, once launched, both online at NEXT.CO.UK and in selected NEXT retail stores.

Lisa Montague, Walker Greenbank's Chief Executive Officer, said: "We have developed an excellent working relationship with NEXT through our successful collaboration on our youthful Scion brand. We're hugely excited to be able to extend this relationship with our iconic Sanderson and Morris & Co brands, whose traditional roots and enduring appeal have particular resonance at the current time. This new licensing agreement marks a tremendous opportunity to bring Sanderson and Morris & Co to new customers through inventive new products being developed by NEXT."

Simon Wolfson, NEXT Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted to be working with Walker Greenbank to develop new products for these wonderful brands. We believe that the combination of their exceptional design work with NEXT's product development, online and retail infrastructure can deliver some new and very exciting product ranges."

From what I can tell and looking at the trades, you can SELL any quantity you want online but you can only BUY about £600s worth online. Anything bigger than £600 appears not to work.

I suspect that means hardly any stock around or a big order or some news coming through.
Something odd.
Before the lockdown you could merrily buy any quantity you wanted online.

Whats happened to the market?
I tried to buy a few more and the system froze up?

(the reason I wanted to buy more is that Morris is being advertised everywhere - even Elle)

Is it a take-over bid or something?

You cant seem to buy more than £600 at once.

HF14: Middle Class office workers are already working from home.
The lockdown worry is shops. WGB is more dependant on shops like John Lewis staying open (and factories) so lockdown BAD for WGB but work from home GOOD for WGB....

I dont think a lockdown2 will do WGB good.... However that being said, it might be (I'm no expert) that WGB dont sell much in the WINTER - perhaps most sales occur in the SPRING..

NOV is going to be a dodgy month - that is my gut feeling.
DEC could be really good - with re-organisation and potential vaccine.

Netcurtains..I thought your logic was that with lockdown more people are at home
so there will be more decorating.

Against all the positive press there is the background worry about #lockdown2 (see twitter) and the fact that its happened in France.
On the other hand the price is looking resilient.
Be nice to get an update from PM...

From This is money (re: DIY) - basically housing boom and to make the most of it do up your house (note: a year or two ago they might not have mentioned wallpaper):

there are many smaller DIY jobs which many people could do to make the home more attractive, and save money, too. These include painting and wallpapering rooms, replacing old or cracked tiles, mending dodgy floorboards and even replacing squeaky hinges.

From todays Times:
Today’s Times reported that it is not just sales of sanitiser that have gone through the roof “Spending on furniture, washing machines and gardening equipment is at the highest level on record. For the first time the public is spending more on household goods than on clothing.”

Also from BBC (re DIY):

The last decade when nearly EVERY SINGLE HOUSEHOLD in the UK redesigned all their interior living spaces was in the 1960s..

The same economic conditions are now in place - massive government spending and a whole new approach to life (work from home):

(Harold Wilson - the last PM the UK had that was openly left wing - bought us "White Heat of technology", The Concorde, the 1966 World Cup, The Beatles and the modern way of living..

@netcurtains: Good initiative to email WGB - thank you. Please let us know when/if you get a response.

UI/UX is so important and I believe you mentioned in a post that web design is your specialism - I hope they duly take note.

On the plus side the RSI is falling fast so once profit takers stopped we might start on the next leg up.

I emailed the company about ordering samples. I found the colefax website great for this - BIG BUTTON RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE...

What you want as the manufacturer/designers is LOADS of contact with the end customers. You get this via knowing what samples the customers want. Leaving it to retailer is hopeless as they have loads of wallpaper/fabric/paint companies.

We need to follow colefax lead and have that SAMPLE button right at the top of the page!
You will note the company is taking significant MONEY out of these samples - so its a bit of
a business in its own right.

Hope the new Sandersons Design Group will have that BUTTON

See button RIGHT UNDER THE F of FOWLER:

Now go to Walkergreenbank - how on earth do you order your sample!!!!!!!

If you read their last trading update they made a BIG BIG POINT about SAMPLES so I do hope they get it right when the new website comes out!!!!

Yes StudentInvestor13 and the reason they say for this improvement is an event that fits the description: "a rising tide floats all boats"....

From their statement:
"We are now half way through our important autumn selling season and believe we are benefitting from home related spending attributable to the worldwide lockdowns which took place earlier in the year."

They are a quality wallpaper and fabrics seller.
Middle Class office workers, working from home, are doing up their houses.

What is excellent about colefax is right at the VERY TOP of their web site is a button saying "ORDER SAMPLES".....

WGB does not appear to have that button!
THE GOOD NEWS
In wgb's recent trading update wgb said a GREAT DEAL about samples:

Innovation, in part as a result of Covid-19, led us to launch our first digital pattern book in July 2020 for Harlequin's new children's collection, the Book of Little Treasures. Sales of the collection in the first weeks following launch have been much higher than we would usually expect and we have been sending out far more samples from the collection than with a traditional pattern book launch. The cost of sending out these samples is much lower than the costs associated with traditional pattern books and there is also valuable feedback from the sampling process in that we can see which of the designs and colourways are the most popular; if we create a pattern book at a later date, we will benefit from knowing which designs to focus on.

The experience of digitally launching the Book of Little Treasures and Queen Square has convinced us that all collection launches in future will have a four week digital pre-launch so we can benefit from initial feedback.

Interesting academic article on rebranding companies. The writers looked at 58 corporations that changed their name,

The studies surprise findings were that the name change does indeed have a significant positive effect on the company if:

a) The company is a manufacturing company... CHECK
b) The name change is linked to cost savings.... CHECK
c) performance prior to the change was relatively poor.... CHECK

However on top of the link to cost savings there can also be a significant advantage with a corporate name change if it alters the perception of the company's products with the general public. There is a tendency to think of Wallpaper as "old fashioned" but linking 'wallpaper' with "DESIGN" or "STUDIO" gives the product a much more "hip and happening" air ...

The name change is an advertising campaign in its own right.

Who has ever heard of "Walker Greenbank" - NO ONE...

Who has heard of "Sandersons" - TENS OF THOUSANDS ...
