30/1/2020 17:56 | Market close "While Unilever's full-year results make for grim reading, investors have taken comfort this morning from the fact that sales came in slightly above analysts' expectations. But Chief Executive Officer Alan Jope, who took over the reins of the consumer goods giant a year ago, clearly has a big job on his hands to arrest the slide in the firm's performance," Adam Vettesse, analyst at eToro said. "Part of that plan could be to hive off part of Unilever's tea division, which was announced today. Whatever form that plan takes, investors will want to see instant results. But if it doesn't result in a significant boost to performance and its shares drop further, it would not be surprising to see Unilever become a takeover target once again as it was in 2017 when rival Kraft failed in a GBP115 billion bid," Vettesse added. 30/1/2020 12:18 | Market report: Unilever saw a better reception to its results, the consumer goods firm's shares up 1.7%. In the year ended December 31, revenue was 2.0% higher at EUR51.98 billion from EUR50.98 billion, though pretax profit was 33% lower year-on-year at EUR8.29 billion from EUR12.36 billion. Unilever, which owns names such as Dove soap and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, said underlying sales climbed 2.9% year-on-year in 2019, with growth below its guided 3% to 5% range, as expected, following a fourth quarter "slowdown". In addition, the company said it has "initiated a strategic review" of its tea business. Alliance News | ![]() philanderer

24/1/2020 18:07 | Jefferies note: We upgrade to Buy (from Hold), following a material correction and ahead of the Q4 on January 30. Sentiment is bleak and consensus has chosen to interpret FY20 growth guidance conservatively. It all feels like the mood prior to the KHC bid, which points to the danger of being short of/ambivalent towards good companies, at low prices. With signs of green shoots in key markets and low valuation a spur to action - or an invitation for activism - we turn positive. The last time ULVR was in this sort of pickle was in January 2017. We all know what happened next. We’re not expecting KHC back any time soon. But experience suggests that good companies, at low prices, get either a spur to more radical action - or invite activism. Activist involvement at NESN, PG, Danone, MDLZ and Pernod won’t have gone un-noticed at Blackfriars. A positive for shareholders, in our view. | ![]() philanderer

13/1/2020 12:11 | Personally I think a combination of markets thinking pound was going to tank. 95+% of U sales are in other currencies. Other factors.Buffet holding 120b usd & would love U to acceptPolman gone and Jope new first yearTrain and smith plus others hold U as dividend payers but if under pressure (Woodford mess) May if offer was right agree to push for sale. It's my biggest holding but due to sharesave sharebuy etc so financially a good deal but did manage to sell 10% at 51.81 on the 9th September. | ![]() magli |
