Fracking in Lancashire by energy firm Cuadrilla has been approved by the Government, overruling the decision of local councillors.

Sajid Javid, the Communities Secretary, decided the shale gas explorer should get planning consent to drill and frack its site at Preston New Road.

A final decision on a second site, Roseacre Wood, has been delayed to allow Cuadrilla to give more evidence about the traffic impact. However, if the company can address concerns raised by the planning inspector, Mr Javid has said he is also minded to grant consent.

The four wells Cuadrilla plans to drill at Preston New Road would be the first horizontal shale wells to be fracked in the UK.

Government approves fracking at one site in Lancashire

The Government has approved fracking for shale gas at one site in Lancashire but is yet to decide on another.

Preston New Road approved waiting on the next one , only hold up issue due to Hgv/road concerns but is expected to be approved as well. Gl :-)

It's strange that mining activities deep underground, which included dynamiting....but not as deep as horizontal drilling. Should not have caused earthquakes?

A yes, will no doubt mean any conventional extraction plans for the Southern Shale Oil reserves will be straightforward.....UK energy security and the likely billions £'s generated is the way forward for this new UK Govt. as an independent UK embarks on a new and exciting chapter in its history. UK fracking ruling due to be announced by government today.


The government is due later to reveal whether it backs fracking plans, in a landmark ruling for the UK shale gas industry.

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid is deciding on a planning appeal by firm Cuadrilla to test frack in Lancashire.

His backing would enable shale rock to be fracked horizontally for the first time, in a bid to yield more gas.

But, protesters say it uses techniques that risk the environment because of the chemicals and pressure used.

Lancashire County Council refused permission to extract shale gas at two sites - Roseacre and Preston New Road - last year on grounds of noise and traffic impact, forcing Cuadrilla to appeal.

In response, a Planning Inspectorate report was sent to the Department for Communities and Local Government on 4 July, with Mr Javid being given three months to reach a decision on both sites.

The announcement will come after a planning inquiry earlier this year in Blackpool lasted six weeks, during which Cuadrilla restated its case.
