Interesting programme on BBC about super bugs and antibiotic resistance with some very interesting facts.

No totally new type of antibiotic in more than 30 years

It can take 20 years and cost up to $1billion to develop and approve a new antibiotic and the developer probably won't get it's money back.

Very informative explanation on how resistance develops from genetic mutations and how the use of broad spectrum antibiotics encourages this by killing off competing microbes but leaving the resistant ones. Research into very quick DNA sequencing is enabling identification of specific infections so that a targeted approach can be used.

700,000 people die annually now from resistant infections with a projection of 10M a year by 2050 which doesn't give much time to develop a new family of antibiotics. If no profit in the $1billion cost, which businesses are going to do the research?

So it's back to Florence Nightingales days of scrupulous hygiene using the best antiseptics available and attention to detail with cleaning to remove the possibility of infection.

Just to recap, Tristel's "moat" is its patented methods of producing fresh chlorine dioxide at the point of use using various methods for different applications. Chlorine dioxide gives quicker complete sterilisation than alternative products without the drawbacks of bleach when used on furnishings.

Although a lot of holders will have bought TSTL in an ISA, some won't, will want to take advantage of capital gains allowance and will sell before the tax year end in the hope possibly of buying back after 30 days. For anyone not aware, moving a share to an ISA (bed and ISA) crystalises your gain but buys the share straight back to put in the ISA and you still have time to do it.
