From Gonz....
"Afternoon all,FFP , pick brains time, is there any advantage in planting without ploughing? 2) is it harder on the implements not ploughing first? 3) Do you get a better a)crop b) yield by not ploughing?"

Fact. There is no definitive answer, what grade of land are you on, light sandy, low yielding, to land on the fens. First and foremost you are looking at return, turning soil costs money on fuel, time, plo shares :-) milk bottle tops!!! So what is the end product and return for that input, good or bad.

Have you got compaction, what organic matter do you have, how many worms, yes worms.

We have been ploughing land for a lot of years, so why should we stop now. That is a really silly comment cos things move on.
An example from past years. OSR Plo the land pre drilling and work it down into an acceptable seed bed, 3/4 passes with this and that, it took longer to establish but tended to yield slightly better. Other route, scratch it in roll it and leave. Plo and prepare seed bed, cost what, £200/ha. just short of 1 tn of OSR. Scratch it in, cost £50/ha .25 tn/ha. Plus you have a fine firm seedbed which helps deter the slug population. (have you read about metaldyhyde in our waterways)

For interest we have practiced min til and we are now trying no til. But now and again you still need the plo.

Google "Crosslot" an amazing approach, nearly bought into it 3 years ago, works wonders on certain land. But is not the perfect answer.

I have always said that peeps on light low yielding land that make a profit work far harder than me on 10tn+/ha land.

Today cultivation's are not about yield in many areas it is about controlling chemical resistant black grass. The jury is still out as to best deal with it. Ploughing yes but others say no til keep the seeds way down so they cannot germinate. The yield on wheat can drop by 5 tn/ha where black grass is a problem. The chemical companies have no answer to it at the moment and if they found a molecule tomorrow it would take at least 10 years to come to market and then they would only have a few years of patent to recoup the 10's of millions that they spent on R&D.

We farmers rely on the Chemical guys to come up with answers to our problems, the good thing now is that us farmers have to come up with a cure in cultivation's, stale seed beds at worst fallow. The thought of seeing a 30 ha field not growing anything for that year!!!!! But we are getting into desperate measures to combat resistant blackgrass. Oh and GM crops is not in anyway the answer, look what is happening in Oz with ref to Roundup resistance.

.Sorry chaps gone on a bit but gonz did ask.....
