18/11/2011 11:06 | "Telecity continues to grow by putting the 'second' city first" November 18, 2011 European data centre provider Telecity is planning to follow up its recent high profile Manchester acquisitions with further investments in the city by 2014. Founded at Manchester Science Park in 1998, Telecity bought UK Grid, in a deal worth £11.7m in September, and Internet Facilitators, for £21.1m, last August. It is also planning to open another 3.5MW data centre in Trafford Park, opposite MediaCityUK, early next year. Given the current levels of activity in the north west, however, the business, which has a market value of £1.2bn , is planning further growth within three years, when it expects to have reached full capacity at its four Greater Manchester sites. "Additional capacity will be needed in Manchester as capacity at the Trafford Park site will last about three years," said Adriaan Oosthoek, managing director UK of Telecity. "We anticipate being full by 2014 as demand is not letting up and we expect continued growth. "People are not going to do less on the internet tomorrow than they are today." He added: "We've expanded in Manchester more than any other city as we see a lot of activity in Manchester. "There are areas in Europe where we don't have locations, and we will be looking at those in the next few years, but Manchester has always been the connectivity hub for the north west similar to London Docklands in the south east and levels of activity are going up. We know the demand from enterprise is also under served in this area. "We do not tend to be in secondary cities but Manchester is different. This is partly to do with our heritage but the connectivity level in Manchester is also quite large, bigger then other European locations." Telecity, which also recently purchased Data Electronics in Dublin, now operates 27 data centres across several major European cities, employing more than 500 staff. It sees its new site near MediaCityUK mainly serving corporate clients looking to outsource IT infrastructure, whereas the UK Grid site, at Manchester Science Park, will be aimed more at attracting technology companies. Oosthoek said: "UK Grid was quite opportunistic. We have been full on the Science Park, at Williams and Kilburn House, for some time and this was an opportunity to expand. "The Science Park has a lot of fibres going into it and has the interconnectivity which the tech companies are looking for. "The MediaCityUK site is close to media content, it is high spec, has good connectivity and more than enough power, although the connectivity is the most important thing." | philanderer
16/11/2011 18:13 | The taxing issues in London today The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) hung over London like a thick smog at last year's DCD event. This year, the clouds have parted, revealing a whole new stratosphere of challenges ....Telecity country manager for the UK and Ireland Adriaan Oosthoek says that if anything, the CRC has simply turned out to be a tax, and a "bit of a pain". "That is how we see it, and that is how our customers view it. The scheme no longer seems to work as it was intended, but that hasn't stopped us having to think about efficiency because this is a tax on carbon use," Oosthoek says. article: | philanderer

15/11/2011 13:12 | 'London capital markets and the data center' Markets have retained confidence in the data center space, where bigger is better for high-net-worth individuals such as premiership footballers and large institutional investors ...The established players, all the big guys like Telecity, Interxion, Global Switch and DRT, have already got the business so they have been able to raise money. Valuations have been good and debt has been raised cheaply. Capital is cheap for those businesses," Harrington says. article : | philanderer

11/11/2011 08:37 | ...and all this in a very volatile market too! Telecity has some excellent defensive qualities in this market. I wonder also if someone is sniffing around Telecity? Possible bid action on the way? Volume seems to be increasing. Cash is cheap at the moment and the future growth for Telecity is looking very strong, so it would make sense for a potential bidder to make a move sooner rather than later? All IMHO of course. | itchycrack
