Lucent Technologies (Research) and French telecom equipment maker Alcatel (Research) announced they are discussing a deal to create a company that could have a combined market capitalization of $34 billion and revenue greater than rival Cisco Systems (Research). Alcatel shares gained 2.5 percent in heavy Paris trading Friday on the news, while Lucent shares gained more than 6 percent in pre-market trading on Inet early Friday.

SPT reacting to this today. Lets hope it wil be swallowed up soon!

PARIS (AFX) - Lucent Technologies Inc and France's Alcatel SA said in a
joint statement that that they are in discussions for a merger.

"We can confirm that Lucent and Alcatel are engaged in discussion about a
merger of equals that is intended to be priced at market. There can be no
assurances that any agreement will be reached or that a transaction will be
consummated," the companies said in the statement, released via PR Newswire.

"We will have no further comment until an agreement is reached or the
discussions are terminated," Lucent and Alcatel said.
