07/3/2005 21:05 | Something else to read Amir Khan today insisted he is happy to carry on boxing as an amateur, as speculation mounts that the Olympic silver medallist will soon move into the professional ranks. The 18-year-old has pulled out of the ABA Championship quarter-finals at the Ocean Room in Gorleston, ostensibly after a row over ticket allocation. Khan said at a news conference this afternoon: "Am I turning professional? Not that I know of. Asif (Vali, his manager) and my dad are talking to people, but nothing has been said. "I'm still amateur. I'm looking for- ward to staying amateur and boxing." Vali confirmed that the ABA had been in touch to increase the allocation to Khan's supporters but insisted that it had come too late. Vali added: "Last night, the ABA did phone me to say 'These are the ticket allocations - now are you going to box?' But it's not as easy as that. "We've told the press we're pulling out and then they expect Amir to go back and fight on that day - I don't think that's fair. "The pressure was put on me last night. I was told, 'If you don't do this, I'll make sure the ABA come up smelling of roses because then it's your fault'. And that's not fair." Professional promoter Frank Warren has long courted Khan and he admitted today he was in ongoing negotiations with the young fighter's team. Warren said: "Of course I am in negoti ations with Amir and I have always said he should turn professional. He has got a silver medal - is it really worth waiting another four years just to go one better and get the gold? "We have met quite a few times and I am confident of striking a deal. My track record speaks for itself and will hopefully swing it. I am hopeful that the combination of his talent and my experience will help to guide Amir all the way to the top." Whatever the truth is behind Khan's withdrawal, his move appears to leave him with nowhere to turn in the amateur ranks. His participation in scheduled future events such as multi-nations tournaments and a projected internat- ional with Cuba would be in jeopardy. But that is likely to become irrele- vant in the coming weeks when Khan's move into the professional ranks is likely to be formally announced. The ABA appeared to give credence to the theory that the Khan camp's decis- ion was due to more than just a ticket problem. They believed they had solved the issue of extra tickets for Khan's large number of followers by shifting his fight to earlier in the afternoon, therefore freeing up the whole hall. The ABA said in a statement: "This solution was offered to Amir's manage- ment at 6.40pm yesterday. At the moment it would appear that this solution is not acceptable to Amir's management." Vali has already stated there will be no reversal of Khan's decision to quit the ABAs - claiming that it has become "a moral issue" since the original announcement was made yesterday. Tyrone Harold, the coach of the Kingfisher amateur boxing club which will host the ABA quarter-finals, put out a statement after Khan's press conference, explaining why the venue had not allocated more tickets for the Bolton fighter's fans. The statement said: "All of the clubs who will be represented on the evening were given an equal allocation which is not uncommon in amateur boxing circles. "In amateur boxing, you don't have a top of the bill. In fact in the latter stages of a championship, all of the boxers are top of the bill and well supported. "We have a regular attendance of 400 localse who sit down to a prestigious dinner boxing show twice a year pre- sented by our club, with a 450 alloca- tion put aside for standing spectators. "The clubs were offered 10 tickets per boxer initially with the ability to buy further tickets should they become available. "When Amir Khan qualified for the quarter-finals on Friday, February 18, we were contacted by his management stating that 300 tickets must be put aside for Khan's supporters. "We explained that the allocation was dealt with fairly, that this show was about 22 boxers and not one. "We explained that should more tickets become available then they would be pooled and Amir's county would have the opportunity to place them where they they felt appropriate. "As of yesterday, 45 tickets had been freed and offered to the North West to distribute, this number had risen to 63 by yesterday evening. "We were put under unrealistic demands from both the ABA of England and Amir Khan's management team to move the venue at four days' notice, however, this was impossible. "The Kingfisher ABC in conjunction with the ABA agreed a compromise to ease the difficult situation. It was agreed that Amir Khan's bout could be held during the day as part of the boxing card that would included the National Schoolboy Golden Gloves Championships. "This would have given Amir's support- ers the chance to buy 400 tickets for the daytime which was 100 more tickets than they had asked for, allowed all of the ticket requirements for the Golden Gloves to be met and would have given the young boxers during the day not only the chace to box on the card of one of their heroes but also to be present and watch the standard needed to scale the heights of boxing. "Also the rest of the Eastern/Home Counties and North Western Counties boxers could then be offered further allocation. This offer was was put to Amir Khan's people and was obviously deemed not good enough." | gvoss

24/2/2005 11:10 | manchester sport boxing Email to a Friend | Your comments Wednesday, 16th February 2005 Hatton bout sells out RICKY Hatton's summer super-bout against Kostya Tszyu sold out in just two-and-a-half hours. All 20,000 tickets to see the Manchester ace take on the world number one light-welterweight were snapped up in record time - despite the fact that the fight will take place at 2am on June 5. That means that the clash has sold out faster than Mike Tyson's appearance at the same venue - the Manchester Evening News Arena - in 2000. And the speed at which fight fans bought the tickets, which ranged in price from £50 to £300 for ringside seats, even caught promoter Frank Warren unawares. "It's the fastest-selling event I have ever been involved with, and that includes Mike Tyson, Frank Bruno's world title challenge, Naseem Hamed - all of them," said Warren, head of the Sports Network company, which is putting on the fight. "But it is quite right that tickets should go so fast, because it is a cracking fight. Remember, we are still five months away, so by the time it comes around, it will be colossal. "I will have fighters on the undercard asking me for tickets nearer the time, and I simply won't have them. "But it's great - this is what we have worked so hard to get to, to have Ricky in this position." Demand was always going to be huge for the unbeaten Hatton's defining fight, and Warren looked into the possibility of putting it on at one of the local football stadiums. But Sky TV objected, and the City of Manchester Stadium was already booked for the opening game of the Women's European Football Championships. Misgivings Originally, there were misgivings about the time of the bout, which had to be shifted back to fit in with American TV schedules - they are major paymasters for the fight. But Warren said that all obstacles have been overcome: "Everything is done - the arena is licensed and we have sorted everything out with the police." With Tszyu commanding a £2.7m purse for putting his IBF belt on the line, and Hatton also in line to receive his first £1m purse, the fight will be screened as a pay-per-view event. Hatton received a big boost this week, as legendary trainer Emanuel Steward is backing him to pull off a shock victory over Sydney-based Russian fighter Tszyu. Steward, head of the Kronk gym in Detroit, has guided fighters such as Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis, Oscar de la Hoya, Evander Holyfield, Julio Cesar Chavez and Leon Spinks to greatness. And he bucks the trend by backing Hatton to beat his older rival. Steward watched Hatton train at the Phoenix gym in Salford, when he brought the original "Hitman", Hearns, to fight at the Arena in 1999, and now says: "I'm going with Hatton. I like his activity level. And Hatton is the bigger man. His style can give Tszyu problems. "It's the right time for Ricky. He's tired of being protected." One man who begs to differ is Brad Vocale, president of the National Boxing Federation in Australia, where the fight will also be screened. He has backed Tszyu to beat Hatton and then move up to welterweight to face old foe Zab Judah, who beat Corey Spinks to become undisputed champion last week. Tszyu's fans wanted their man to challenge Spinks, but Vocale defends his decision to take on Hatton first. "It really was the fight that shone the brightest in that weight," he said. "If Kostya beats Hatton then there's no one else around, there's no point in staying. I think Hatton is very good, but he's never fought anyone as hard as Kostya." 16/1/2005 01:29 | The Sunday Times - Business January 16, 2005 Frank Warren fights to hook Title Boxing Mark Kleinman SPORTS NETWORK, the AIM-quoted company run by boxing promoter Frank Warren, is to enter the branded- goods market with the acquisition of Title Boxing, the internationally renowned name worn by some of the world's most famous fighters. The firm is in negotiations to buy the US-based manufacturer of boxing equipment and apparel - worn by former world heavyweight champion Frank Bruno - and is expected to have to pay several million pounds. The deal will mark the latest phase of Sports Network's expansion following last year's reverse takeover by Sports & Leisure Group. Warren is keen to expand the company by recruiting new boxers to its ranks, increasing broadcasting revenues and developing additional businesses that can exploit the Sports Network brand. Sports Network, which represents British boxers including Ricky Hatton and Danny Williams, is chaired by David Elstein, the former chief executive of Channel Five. Elstein also sits on the boards of cable firm NTL, Really Useful Theatres and the Commercial Radio Companies Association. | hirschnathan
09/1/2005 23:03 | Tszyu agrees to Hatton showdown IBF light welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu says he has agreed to fight Ricky Hatton in Manchester on 5 June. The Russian-born Australian told his website that he expected the bout to take place at the MEN Arena at 0400 BST for the benefit of viewers in America. But Hatton's promoter Frank Warren has indicated there are still details to sort out before the fight is confirmed. Tszyu will reportedly earn at least $5m (£2.7m) for the bout, which would be one of the boxing highlights of 2005. And he has called a press conference for Monday to announce full details. "It gives me focus for the year ahead. I am excited to be fighting Ricky because I believe he is a worthy challenger," said Tszyu. "This is the fight my fans want to see, so I look forward to putting on a good show for them." Tszyu's promoter Vlad Warton added: "We did agree some time ago in principle, verbally, to take care of the deal. "However, I could never commit on behalf of Kostya because that is up to Kostya. Now we have done that." Manchester's MEN Arena has been provisionally booked for the contest but Warren has not ruled out switching to an outdoor venue. Hatton, a fanatical supporter of Manchester City, has made no secret of his dream to fight at their City of Manchester Stadium. Story from BBC SPORT: | kantona |
