CALZAGHE AGREES NEW DEAL
by Iain Axon 2004-11-01 17:36:08 GMT

Promoter Frank Warren today (1 November) announced that WBO World Super-Middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has signed a new managerial and promotional agreement with Sports Network.

Calzaghe, unbeaten in 38 fights and the longest reigning world champion in British boxing, defended his title successfully for the fifteenth time against Kabary Salem in Edinburgh last month.

The 32-year-old Welshman joins British heavyweight star Danny Williams, who challenges Vitali Klitschko for his WBC World Heavyweight Title next month in Las Vegas, in re-signing with Warren.

"I am delighted that Joe has extended his managerial and promotional contracts with me. He has been very loyal and has showed great faith in our seven years working together and I aim to repay him by delivering the big fight that he craves." said Warren.

Moving up to the light-heavyweight division and becoming a two-weight world champion is Calzaghe's ambition and negotiations between Warren and Dan Goossen, promoter of the IBF World Champion Glen Johnson, continue.

Another option for Calzaghe is to unify the super-middleweight division and a possibility could be a showdown with the new IBF World Champion Jeff Lacy.

BREAKING NEWS

SPORTS NETWORK RUSSIA
by Iain Axon 2004-10-29 09:49:09 GMT

Sports Network is delighted to announce its expansion into Russia, teaming up with Vladimir Hrunov who is to launch Sports Network Russia.

Sports Network Russia will promote and manage boxers, as well as securing broadcasting rights for Sports Network promotions and other world class promotions for broadcast in the former USSR.

Russia is one of the great untapped resources of the boxing world, and is a region packed with talent.

In recent years, a number of high quality boxers have emerged – many of them schooled before the Iron Curtain came down – with undisputed light-welterweight champion Kosta Tszyu one of the leading lights.

Sports Network Russia aims to be the premier boxing organisation in the country, with already-existing relationships with the leading boxing talent in Russia and all the major broadcasters.

"This is a fantastic opportunity and I'm delighted Vladimir has decided to take up this franchise opportunity", said Sports Network chief Frank Warren.

"But this isn't just about making stars of the guys from Russia and Eastern Europe – British fighters like Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe will also have their fights screened over there."

"We are looking forward to replicating the success we have had in the UK in Russia."

Hatton forced to wait for big break
By Bob Mee
(Filed: 23/10/2004)

The fight that Ricky Hatton should have had takes place in Berlin tonight. Vivian Harris, the World Boxing Association light-welterweight champion, turned his back on a deal to defend against Hatton, preferring a re-match with Oktay Urkal for less money in Germany.

Hatton's promoter Frank Warren says Harris, a Guyanan who lives in the United States, turned down more than £400,000 to box the Manchester-based fighter. Instead he opted for a lesser pay-day against Urkal, whom he has already beaten once this year.

Ready to go: Ricky Hatton is close to two title fights
Warren and Hatton were mystified when, after lengthy negotiations, the deal feel through.

Now Hatton, who insists he wants to box the top light-welterweights in the world, will have to wait to see how his career develops.

The world light-welterweight scene has become increasingly fragmented following a lengthy injury to the generally acknowledged champion, Kostya Tszyu. He returns to the ring in Phoenix, Arizona, on Nov 6 in a defence of the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation belts against Sharmba Mitchell from Washington DC. The WBA took away Tszuy's title during his lay-off and installed Harris as their champion. While Harris cannot claim to be the No 1, the WBA belt has given him a status that Hatton, whose long-time tenure as World Boxing Union title-holder means nothing outside Britain, cannot yet claim, in spite of a 37-fight unbeaten run.

Earlier this month Hatton outclassed Mike Stewart to secure his place as the leading contender for the IBF title, which means he will be in a position to challenge the winner of the Tszyu-Mitchell fight.

In addition, he is the mandatory challenger for the World Boxing Organisation version held by the unbeaten Puerto-Rican Miguel Cotto.

However, these fights are still only talking points. While Hatton believes he is close to a major fight, a meeting with his major domestic rival, Junior Witter, will not happen in the foreseeable future.

Witter, the British, Commonwealth and European champion, has been seeking a contest with Hatton for more than two years without success. He now continues his career with a European title defence against the Pole, Krzystof Bienias, at Wembley on Nov 12.

"Deep down I know the chances are that Hatton won't fight me," said Witter. "I have thrown my hat into the ring enough times, but Ricky keeps kicking it back out again. While there's a glimmer of hope that the fight will happen I won't give up, but I need to do my own thing."

Jason Cook, from Measteg in Wales, is likely to box Aldo Rios, of Argentina, in an International Boxing Organisation lightweight title fight in Hereford on Nov 5.

Rios is the probable replacement for the South African, Philip Ndou, who has retired after a brain scan revealed a serious medical problem.

On the same promotion, British featherweight champion Dazzo Williams defends his title against Scottish challenger John Simpson.

Calzaghe eyes early ring return

Calzaghe set to move up
Calzaghe struggles to win
Joe Calzaghe blamed a lack of activity for his rusty display against Kabary Salem in Edinburgh and said he will be back in the ring in February.
"I'm not superhuman and need to be active and fighting more regularly," he said after labouring to his record-equalling 15th world-title defence.

"I'll stay in the gym and be back in February, it's made me more determined to show I'm better than that display.

"My first priority is a world-title fight at light heavyweight."

Calzaghe added: "It's up to [promoter] Frank Warren, but the big fights have eluded me over the last seven years.

"If Frank can't deliver at light heavyweight it'll have to be another defence at super middleweight - I'm a fighter and need to stay active."

Calzaghe has targeted a match with either IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson or WBA and WBC title-holder Antonio Tarver.

New WBC super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy has also been touted as a future opponent, but Warren has his doubts about that coming about.

I'll take something from this fight - mainly don't fight Egyptians who come flying in with head butts!

Colin Jones' verdict
"Lacy says he wants to fight Joe, but I don't think his management want it," Warren told BBC Sport Wales.

"To be fair to them, if I was Lacy's manager I wouldn't take the fight yet, but let's hope we can entice them over."

Calzaghe's poor display against Salem, where he was floored for just the second time in his career, could give Lacy's team encouragement that they would win a fight with the long-reigning Welsh champion.

"I'm not happy with my performance, but it's to be expected with my inactivity over the last 24 months," said Calzaghe, who before the Salem fight had fought less than 11 rounds in three fights over the previous two years.

"He was not the ideal opponent after so long out. It was the dirtiest fight I've ever been involved in, my head feels like it's been hit by a sledgehammer because of all the head butts.

"All world champions have to win ugly sometimes. You never stop learning and I'll take something from this fight - mainly don't fight Egyptians who come flying in with head butts!

"It hasn't been an awful year. I've had two defences and two wins - I've still got my belt and I'm still world champion, and 2005 is going to be my year."

date has been set .....

Danny Williams is set to meet Vitali Klitschko for the WBC world heavyweight crown in America on 11 December.

The fight against the Ukrainian is "99% certain" to be at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Williams, 31, upset former undisputed champion Mike Tyson in July, prompting promoter Frank Warren to secure the British fighter a title shot.

"I always believed I would get to the top. Now that I'm here I'm going to make the most if it," said Williams.

"I am grateful for the opportunity and I know I am fighting one of the best heavyweights in the world but I am determined to bring the world title back to Britain.

"This is a totally different fight than Tyson and for this I need to come in lighter and sharper.

"I didn't think I would get the opportunity so quickly but I used the Tyson fight as my springboard and now I am here I am going to make the most of it."

Klitschko insisted Williams was always the likely opponent for his first title defence after destroying his own dream of a fight with Tyson.

The Ukrainian was ringside to cover Williams' win in Louisville for German radio and said: "I wanted Williams because he destroyed my dream of fighting Mike.

"I was very close to doing that and I was disappointed, but I was also surprised and impressed with Williams' performance."

Former world champion Lennox Lewis, who defeated both Tyson and Klitschko before retiring, says Williams can follow in his footsteps.

"I give Danny Williams a great shot," Lewis told www.dannywilliams.tv

Lewis beat Klitschko in June 2003 after recording a sixth-round stoppage which left the Ukrainian needing more than 50 stitches.

"I thought Danny Williams did great against Mike Tyson and now Danny has three great ways to beat Klitschko," said Lewis.

"First, he can go after the cuts around Klitschko's eyes. I totally exposed Klitschko as a fighter who cuts up very badly.

"Danny Williams should also definitely, definitely go to Vitali Klitschko's body. He has a stamina problem and as he takes deeper breaths you can really hurt him to the body.

"When I fought Klitschko I didn't think I was getting to him with the body shots at first but, later on in the rounds, I realised that he becomes very vulnerable to them in the second, third minute of the rounds.

"Also, I think Danny could outbox Klitschko. That's the other way Williams could become champion. If he keeps his cool he could outbox Klitschko and win a decision."

Williams is delighted that Lewis has given him his backing.

"Lennox has always been a big inspiration to a new generation of British fighters, it's great to have him in my corner for this title fight," said Williams.

"Now with Lennox retired it is down to me to take it to these heavyweights and bring the world heavyweight title back to Britain where it belongs."

Mark,good informative thread ..

lets hope the slow gradual upward momentum is continued .. There are are three significant events that could really give this co a shot in the arm ..one is already in the planning, this is the Williams fight with Klitcshko (fingers crossed, you can never be too sure with these things allz it need is a freak incident in the gym for the flight to be put off). Regardless of the result Williams and Sports Network are sure of a bumper pay day ... the second event is the possibility of williams win ..if williams wins the fight, which is not impossible given that his opponent has been beaten before, then Warren will really milk the cow and it will be bonanza for sop holders.

the third thing is the possibility of the signing of Amir Khan ..at the moment he is to boxing what rooney is to Football .. a hot talent ..it's widely believed that Warren has made a clever offer to Khan offering him the opportunity to remain Amatuer with some of his bouts being on the undercard for the other title fights ...and Khan can at any stage under the terms decide to turn professional if things are going to plan.. the Khan camp is considering this offer and decision could be out soon, as the British Amatuer Association have made an offer to Khan of around £70k a year and they want a quick decision.

So exciting times ahead... good luck to all
