Very good news.
It’s mining now or nothing which will get Ecuador where it needs to be going forward.

RIP the 7 people who died.

A poor country has to work out how it can best raise GDP per head and achieve a prosperous future. I think that I would have put up petrol prices, conceded to the protestors and lowered them but only to secure a good agreed future for mining which is the county`s best hope of advancement. Some may already know this.

We are learning things we didn't know before, but I guess Newcrest BHP CGP and Blackrock knew. Given the creditable and extensive lengths that Solg has gone to, to be highly inclusive of the local population, then I guess Nick Mather knows all about tribal sensitivities too.

It would not be in the interests of the Cascabel locals to make trouble, although perhaps a few who feel left out might try it on? This is where we see if the company investment in the local population holds good. In the meantime lets hope something positive comes out of Moreno's meeting with the tribal leaders. Plainly this is about more than just fuel prices.

Perhaps instead of lifting diesel prices by $1 a gallon, he should have gone for a 5% 'green' tax on haulage charges payable by the customer? It could be 'sold' as encouraging more efficient transportation. At the same time cut the fuel subsidy by 5%, and you have an easier pill to swallow, more subsidy cuts could follow over subsequent years to wean people off cheap fuel.

I believe what this is demonstrating is the difficulty in establishing a reliable understanding of the true political situation in Ecuador. I have no idea where to get a reliable picture from. The only thing which seems to be agreed by all parties is that the demonstrations are continuing.

We know that 3 leaders have been deposed in the last 3 decades as a result of demonstrations by the indigenous population. Thus, it is a potentially serious issue. I sold SOLG because I am unable to determine the true level of political risk currently in play. If anyone here has a strong understanding of Ecuador politics, there is potentially money to be made. Without that understanding, I believe it is too much of a gamble.

A seven minute interview with NM from Beaver Creek uploaded just a week ago, probably predating the current unrest so no mention of that unfortunately but some very large numbers being put out there by NM.

He is talking long term. The current unrest will pass.

“Solg will Bank $15B over the next 15 years”!

Lots of info here, it would seem that if talks could happen today it would be a good thing. It's evident that there's been a lot more going on in the country for a while and these austerity measures are the touch paper for a lot of other grievances.

None of this is being reported in the western corporate press. Then again Macron's thugs in France are not being reported either. They blinded a young woman yesterday with a missile. Horrifying.

Saw trucks running over demonstrators last night. Check out #Equador on Twitter. You'll see people getting shot behind cardboard shields, the army protecting demonstrators from the police, fighting in the streets, ect. Negotiations?

Its a difficult one to decide .

Certainly a Newcrest buyout of Cornerstone would show support of the government polices. I dont know if thats the kind of support they would want annouced just now . However if NM is holding the news back he might be under pressure from the blackrocks of this world to get the price up as they have shareholders to consider as well.

I guess before the month is out we should be a little clearer on everything from the strikes to cornerstone .

mknight, like every other private holder I have no idea what is really going on, except that we are deliberately being kept in the dark while NM manoeuvres as best he can. I would like to know if that IMF loan is predicated on expected mining revenues. NM has certainly done a good job on getting the share price down!

The scenario where Newcrest takes CGP, and then does a finance deal with BHP doesn't sound too far fetched. Presumably CGP would have difficulty coming up with their 15% of a likely $3.5 billion development cost, so a share based buy out would be a relief for them, whether it be Solg or Newcrest shares.

Perhaps by this time next week we might see what Newcrest have in mind, or they might all hunker down until some sort of normality returns to the country.

Also...

4. NM 'may well have' conspired with the IMF to force the Ecuadorean government to remove the subsidy on fuel. This resulted in civil unrest and a reduction in the SOLG share price.

Lefrene was the first person to bring up the possibility of SOLGOLD pulling out of buying Cornerstone and Newcrest stepping in . BHP then funding Solgold to the tune of 15 percent . Making one big happy family . All NM had todo was

1. Not bid for Cornerstone .

2. Drive down our share price by not making any annoucements and bore the hell out of P.I,s who need to news to survive .

3. Agree with BHP to the cunning plan .

I think NM has done his job to perfection . No doubt his options will be in the money when all comes out .
Just to say i have no proof of this and you may wish to take this with a large pinch of salt . However it would not surprise me if this was true as i cannot think of any reason why NM would not raise funds earlier or why he could not get a translator for the cornerstone takeover or why he would not try to close the deal before Newcrest were free to approach Cornerstone .

Thanks. The current climate both helps and hinders intentions but richer, bigger players can afford to take a much longer view of Cornerstone1s usefulness.

Yes

And would explain why solgold have not produced documentation for 6 months in French which was the reason according to solgold which was stated in an RNS.that was causing the delay .....

Newcrest also have a good relationship with Cornerstone.
