05/2/2009 14:59 | NCB on Smurfit Kappa "severe drop in demand" and "no dividend" Stora Enso has this morning reported a severe drop in demand in Q4 2008 and stated that it expects the operating environment for at least the early part of 2009 to be as challenging. Following the reported loss for 2008 the Group has stated that no cash dividend will be paid. Within the industrial packaging division sales declined 12% y-o-y to 242.5m primarily due to significantly lower delivery volumes as demand weakened. Operating profit declined 78% y-o-y to 6.2m due to production curtailments and lower sales prices for some industrial packaging products. Demand for industrial products was weakened by the wider economic slowdown, while containerboard prices fell as supply exceeded demand and OCC prices declined. Corrugated packaging prices also decreased slightly. Prices for most industrial packaging products are expected to remain under continued pressure. Smurfit Kappa reports Q4/FY08 results next Wednesday (11 February) for which we have assumed no final dividend given SKG's continued focus on de-leveraging the balance sheet. | lbo

The Wall St Journal has reported that SSCC is considering the move because of weakening sales and a cash crunch. In a statement this morning, Smurfit Kappa said it got rid of its stake in SSCC years ago. It said: "In 2002, the former Jefferson Smurfit Group now part of Smurfit Kappa, distributed its 29.5pc shareholding in SSCC, to its shareholders, as part of the privatisation of JSG which completed in October, 2002. "Smurfit Kappa has no shareholding in SSCC and both companies are totally independent of one another." | lbo
