Anyone else still in two minds about holding IP ?

In theory a more secure dividend as more diversified, plus possible uptrend in the packaging market, plus cost-savings. Where are the downsides ? Apart from a bit of extra admin.

For the sake of few more pence in the short term I wouldn't bother to hold.
For the long run it may be a good deal though.

I would suggest that 432 would more accurately reflect the ongoing situation with IP at present.

Thank you PJ. Hate to be an old age mentioner but now that I am 29years and 640 months old the brain and other parts do not work quite as well as was once the case.

Sounds about right Buyzantium. (Although about £200 less by today's prices / exchange rate).

Cheers,

If I own 2000 shares in DS Smith I assume it is as easy as multiplying by 0.1285 to get the number of shares I will own in International Paper which will presently be in dollars and then converting the daily price of IP into sterling to get the value on a daily basis. Thus 257 shares today 11,189 dollars would be worth 8752 .4 UK pounds.

£1,000 in 1990 would have a value of just £2,700 today, which is just about acceptable in the event the bid succeeds to conclusion. I remember ds smith shares hitting £5.51 ten years ago.

Wow a 30 years holding. How much £1000 back then would be worth today, discounted by inflation and compounding the dividend?

I intend to hold onto my DSSmith shares for at least two years. I’ve had mine in an ISA since the 1990’s, by far my biggest holding. The first shares cost £1.49 a share, other DSS shares cost more.

Will continue to hold now and hope that the intended listing in the UK is favourable to present ISA shareholders.

At about 425p late on, only 10-15p below where IP is now, so quite a narrow gap considering still a chance it does not go ahead. Looks like time to sell the last ones to get out, although IP probably a good long term hold.

Actually, I just got that wrong. Google Finance was giving me the wrong price for SMDS. I'm confused about what the current SMDS price is, if you look at the trades being reported on advfn, they don't seem to match the current bid/ask price.

Hmm

So the gap between the two share prices has narrowed from £1 to about 47p right now - with SMDS rising and IP dropping. That gap should continue to narrow as the takeover date approaches. I'm certainly happy now to hold and see this through.

PJ

This is my second current takeover by a US company (the other is Tyman/Quanex). In the latter case, it's a straightforward cash+shares offer with the US shares tradable in UK as CDI's. Just a 'heads up' that if you hold US shares, you need to have a Form W-8BEN in place not only to avoid the US 'holding tax' on any dividends but also because some platforms (HL in my case) won't allow you to hold US shares on their platforms without one. I note that in this case IP intend to keep their European operations in London with a 'secondary listing' on the London Stock Exchange and maybe this avoids the need for a W-8BEN. Does anyone know? In any event I have renewed mine; better safe than sorry.

If only DS Smith had really jumped to the top of the FTSE100; I make that around £140 per share!

IP share price has recovered quite a bit during the day and is pushing our share price higher. If we get a Labour Government next week there must be a possibility that we suffer another "Truss interlude" and if that happens I'd rather have dollar exposure. This adds a third reason for me to hold on here

DS Smith jumped to the top of the FTSE 100 after Brazilian pulp maker Suzano said it had ended talks to buy International Paper. DS Smith agreed to be bought by International Paper in April for $7.2bn.

The Suzano spoiler now looks to be out of the way and any IP shareholder who thought it would happen has had plenty of time to get out. It's now our time to ride the wave provided by the IP bid and the likely upturn in the board cycle! IP share price performance not that great before all this acquisition activity happened but we look good for them and, a far as I can see, they look good for us. Happy to take IP paper and hold for at least 12 months if the bid goes through.

I guess that this morning's rise is due to Suzano calling off the deal for IP

After close IP share price heavily down it would appear. If so what does this indicate.

Well the gap didn't close today. IP's share price is a smidgen up SMDS's price is down. Based on current IP price and USD exchange rate, SMDS takeover value is £4.74 almost exactly a pound above the current SMDS price.

If you think the IP takeover is a dead cert, then it's time to bag a bargain!

PJ

DSSmith51 I think so, the gap will close from both sides now
