Markth My Igindex account has just been opened. I won't use it until I completely understand the principles. I have noticed that you seem to close out daily. Do you need to do this? IG seem to indicate that you close your position at the end of the day and that if you want to continue you can reopen with a reduced spread. Am I reading this right? Sorry about your losses last week but it seems (although in hindsight) that if your position remained open you would have gained at some point. Is timing crucial or can you hang on?

Market Report: Shire surges on hopes of end to patent disputes

Hopes that Shire Pharmaceuticals is close to settling a number of patent disputes with rival drug makers sent its shares to the top of the FTSE 100 gainers list.

Shire soared 7 per cent, or 55.5p, to 850.5p yesterday, on talk the group will soon settle its disagreements with generic producers trying to challenge patents on its key hyperactivity drug Adderall XR.

It seems the speculation was prompted by comments by Matthew Emmens, the pharma group's chief executive, at an investor conference in the US this week. Adderall is important for the group - it accounts for nearly half of its total sales - so it is no surprise that rumours about its future had such an impact on the company's shares. Traders hope that a settlement will greatly extend Adderall's shelf life.

Deutsche Bank also seemed to hint that a deal is on the way. The broker said: "It is certainly not unreasonable to assume there is an increasing likelihood that Shire and one or more of its generic challengers (most notably Barr Laboratories and Impax) will settle."

Unless by fluke you time this perfectly I wouldn't bother shorting tomorrow. There's more to come especially if Impax follows suit.

No way aclark. Those comments were made after I had traded in and out already. I only posted cos there were some misleading comments from yesterday and this morning by another poster. I shorted 8:29am at 844.7p and covered 9:08am at 839.3p. You can see the time of the posting for yourself at 10:29am. Incidentally I am not stupid enough to try to influence the price movement of a share and certainly not something the size of Shire. Its futile.

From Sharecast's market report this morning:

Shire led the risers after Deutsche Bank lifted its target price on the shares and talked of a possible settlement between the company and Barr over a generic copy of Shire's hyperactivity treatment Adderall XR.

This has absolutely no connection with an offer for the company. Its an agreement which allows Shire to maintain its patent on Adderall for longer. They will however eventually lose it. On the back of this Deutsche Bank have upgraded their target share price for Shire.

Yes I see that RNS. But some party accumulating a notifiable interest of 3% is quite different from a "bid at 975p"
