Scottish & Newcastle (SCTN.LN) up 2.3% at 468.75p amid speculation Carlsberg's (CARL-A.KO) ownership structure may change, say traders. "There's a rumor resurfacing that the Carlsberg Foundation, which owns 51%, may reduce this level," explains analyst. If this occurs, Carlsberg could be merged or taken over, he says. "Carlsberg has a checkered track record and a lot of people think a merger with Scottish & Newcastle makes sense in terms of decent synergies and the opportunity to improve management quality." Carlsberg trades up 3% at DKK344. Scottish & Newcastle, Carlsberg not immediately available to comment. (SMT)

I logged on early today as I had the jitters re RSA, wondering if I should have sold yesterday, ahead of today's results. I needn't have worried, Andy Haste still appears to have them well on track! :)

Back to SCTN: Perhaps you'd be kind enough to have a word with Girlie if you get a chance... She seems to have become so emotionally detached from this share that she can't tell her downtrends from her rectangles LOL ;)

Well talking of rediculous comments, there are none mre rediculous than your "(the downtrend has already begun)"

Not my problem that you have nothing much to gloat about. Bye.

Come on coogar, that's the most rediculous comment I've ever heard from you. I've made good profit from sctn through short term trading and medium term holding, haven't touched it since I sold on the 5th of April this year(did post most of my trades the same day on here), am currently on the sideline. So why should I be jealous? I'm not the type to get jealous of anything or anyone.

Oh another thing, I don't gloat over other stocks like you do.

Goodbye! Think of me when your beloved sctn hits 445. (the downtrend has already begun)

Girlie

You're only jealous cos you didn't buy in the 360's like the smart ones among us.

p.s. for once I disagree with your TA - resistance @ 463p would be fine if in a downtrend, but we are not.

I'm afraid 463 will now act as resistance, 445 should be reached within weeks.
I'm in no hurry to buy sctn that's for sure.

"As they say, Coogar, What is this 'true to form'? Selling at a profit?"

No, buying ahead of a price-drop! I find it reassuring to learn that you sold half though, that almost guarantees a surge in the share price.

Girlie

At today's level, it's unlikely 445p will be reached even after xd. Who knows what might happen between now and then though, eh?

coogar, I thought that was pretty obvious .
Oh I might lend you a helping hand when it hits 445.

Well, at least AO is true to form! ;)

Coogar rates SCTN a STRONGer HOLD than ever following today's mostly excellent results. If I wasn't already in I'd be buying at this level. But I am in, so I'm HOLDING (without increasing my HOLDING).

Girlie, what is it that you feel I need to recover from? LOL

Well TokyoGirl : you will just have to drink beer and not wine on your next trip to france. (Better for you as well) : anyway glad I sold half yesterday for a nice little turn.

By the way - the results were not bad at all - in fact quite good and long term these look to be a good bet. Especially if the GBP gets over its silly habit of pretending that they actually like drinking cheap French wine

So there's nothing exiciting about the interim, it is on target for the full year, profits up by 8.7% to £163m, in the middle of the market range of forecasts.
French are to blame!

coogar, soon you shall need a helping hand to get you into a recovery position.

Nice tick-up prior to tomorrow's results. That normally bodes well.

However, Coogar remains cautious at current price (read my last few posts). And nervous... After all, AO admitted to buying back in recently and he normally gets it wrong LOL

As for Girlie's 445p: I am still not selling, as even at that price I will be in a stonkingly good position (and not lying on the floor in case you wondered).

From the Sunday papers round up

"Scottish & Newcastle "In a recent trading update, S&N said trading for the first four months of 2005 had been in line with expectations... Dividends are set to rise to 21.5p." Good value (Sunday Times)"

Glad someone else thinks this when I have just bought in.

M, so far I have only been to South of France three times in the last four years and have very much enjoyed my holiday there each time. I would add that I haven't seen any French person drinking S&N brands of alcoholic drinks, that's probably because I was looking at the wrong places plus I have only enjoyed the taste of wine, especially French wine. However I did read somewhere that consumer confidence in the French markets is weak, France where S&N owns market leader Kronenbourg, seems to be losing its thirst for beer while soft drinks are becoming increasingly popular.

Haven't been to Cannes yet, but thanks for the offer. I shall bear that in mind and will let you know in due course. I wish I could be a regular to South coast one day, such a happy, relaxed and pleasant place to be in. It's always nice to get away from my designing studio from time to time to recharge my bactery properly. For the timebeing and in the foreseeable future, there's just too much work commitment here busy taking care of my own niche brand as you know...and playing the stockmarket in between when time permits. Well there's something I'm looking forward to - I have been promised a romantic long weekend to Amsterdam in about two months time. It will be my first trip to Holland, exciting isn't? LOMBLMTO!

TG,

Current newsflow suggests worldwide risks are lower than I'd given credit a few weeks back. As I'd see it though, the 'brand' is worth the difference between the profits a 'commodity' beer can generate and those attributable to a branded beer. The difference is mostly the higher price a consumer will pay.

Over time trends change (think back 10 years and favoured brands were heineken, hofmeister? etc..)

Since IFRS will require annual testing of goodwill, and ulvr and sctn share a high proportion of assets which are brand based, it may make earnings more irreguar. ulvr just faced this with 'slim fast' but the shares rose...

The timing of any such process is anyone's guess.

What would I buy at?

Depends on wider issues, including alternatives available, but 440 looks decent value in the present environment, but we'll see..(trouble is, of course, if it reaches there it looks to be in a pretty strong downtrend at the time)

South of France sounds too hot for us, the mountains of Austria were nice too ;-)

If you're a regular to South coast, a client has a nice flat on the front in Cannes, I'd be happy to put you in touch.
