Crafty, I think that buybacks in SMT are good. Not needing to increase the overall position, but each share will own more of the same companies than before.

I find motley fool can have opposite view articles, at exactly the same time for some companies, so it pleases everybody I guess.

Takeiteasy - the private unlisted companies that make up a quarter of the nav is the specific issue for SMT hence the need for an aggressive buyback.

"In a volatile period for growth investment, we own a portfolio of established companies achieving rapid expansion, propelled by enduring structural trends. Advances in foundational technologies are unlocking exciting new products, services, and business models. These well-funded public and private companies are shaping the future of the economy. The stock market has yet to fully recognise their progress

Question: why is the stock market not recognising their potential is the 64K dollar question - is this specific to this IT or a wider market issue.

This appears to have done well over the long term and less so over short term - a smaller investor viewpoint link fwiw etc (dyor etc)

Career update: I am co-founding a new research group called "GEAR" at NVIDIA, with my long-time friend and collaborator Prof. @yukez
. GEAR stands for Generalist Embodied Agent Research.

We believe in a future where every machine that moves will be autonomous, and robots and simulated agents will be as ubiquitous as iPhones. We are building the Foundation Agent — a generally capable AI that learns to act skillfully in many worlds, virtual and real.

2024 is the Year of Robotics, the Year of Gaming AI, and the Year of Simulation. We are setting out on a moon-landing mission, and getting there will spin off mountains of learnings and breakthroughs.

Join us on the journey:

I used to feel similarly about some of the new tech, in log's post.
Then I had the joy of seeing my family miles away, with the use of Facetime, every day if I wanted to!

People are able to send professional photographs, in real time, sharing moments with those who are absent.

Then again, as leaders and police can get heavy handed and try to hide the truth, I have seen things....that sometimes I wish I hadn't seen.... from the rock face, sometimes from ordinary people, at times from unbiased reporters.
Reporters being a very endangered species as they are bumped off or just intimidated, so that brave doctors provide evidence of atrocities, from their neutral phones.

Yes the recent step shows things can be faked but my feeling is the people will fight back.
For every action there is a counteraction.
Like most of human nature there is good and bad in everything we do.

“A whole new industry is being formed, and that’s driving our growth,” he [Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang] said on the company’s earnings call. On Wednesday, Nvidia reported quarterly sales of $22.1 billion and forecasted another $24 billion for its current quarter, each more than triple what was posted a year earlier and ahead of Wall Street’s bullish expectations. Asa Fitch, “Nvidia Hits $2 Trillion Valuation on Insatiable AI Chip Demand,” Wall Street Journal, February 23, 2024.

From what I have seen over the years, the internet, smart phones cause more harm then good with out it there would be no internet gambling or trading where people lose 100,000 of thousands of pounds, there would be no follow what others are doing on social media to the detriment of themselves.

People wouldn't be able to spend money, money they do not have so fast on buying things online they do not need.

Social media and following the latest trend is damaging to the younger generation, destroying them.

Smart phones are only turning the younger generation into a bunch of fearful Zombies.

None of this would be happening without the internet and smart phones, AI is only going to make things much, much worse.

That's not true, they realised a portion of Tesla when it was peaking about 2/3 years ago.....then reinvested into the likes of Northvolt. Shrewd.

Nvidia is trading close to its long term forward PE so valuation not out of line where it has always been over past 10 years.

The stock trades at about 32 times forward earnings, compared with rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. at 45 times. The shares are also cheaper than those of Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp., while the Nasdaq 100 Index trades at a 25 times multiple.

This seems to be a common misunderstnding with this stock.

NVIDIA is in bubble territory, with its share price going up like the handle of a hockey stick and at some time in the not too distant future will do a Moderna and Tesla, in other words the share price will fall 50% from its highs and as per usual SMT will not sell their NVIDIA when near their highs instead they will hang on to see the share price half as they did with both Tesla and Moderna.
