Rolls-Royce to double sourcing from India over the next five years |
More woes for Boeing likely re B777x delays, htTps://simpleflying.com/emirates-dubious-boeing-777x-by-2026/means more joy for Airbus and RR not only because it will extend life of A380, but puts them in the frame for getting the better of a large order from Cathay Pacific for widebody aircraft:hTTps://onemileatatime.com/news/cathay-pacific-airbus-boeing-aircraft-order/ |

For my sins, I still have a holding in in the hope that they will come good. |
I agree on Tidal PPower - especially in the Severn Estuary. Always dismissed due to cost/ongoing maintenance and wildlife |
I appreciate that clarification Skinny. I'd not read enough of the report in my paper.
The Independent reports that the subsidy is being reduced when the current support scheme ends in 2027. The plant will then operate not as a baseload provider but rather, as a 'dispatchable power' generator - used only when needed allowing wind and solar to be used when they are available.
I see no mention of any payments being made for when Drax is not required to generate. Wind farm owners, and solar owners, are paid when they are instructed to not generate. I only hope Drax does not benefit from that same regime. |
I'd agree thegrafter that nuclear needs to provide the baseload for electricity generation. As such, it could almost totally replace fossil fuel generation within 15 years.
But there's still mileage in generation from wave power. Unlike solar, wave, or rather tidal flow, occurs four times a day (two in, two out) and unless the moon is destroyed such will continue forever. Yet we aim to cover 10% of productive farmland with solar panels.
I also read that Drax is to be given yet more subsidy for the next five years for their wood pellet burning operation. Might as well plant fast growing trees (willow) on that 10% of land, and pelletise the produce - at least the shipment costs and pollution resulting from that will be greatly reduced. |
Careful , forget anything else because if not fossil fuels, then nuclear is the only option , full stop . These labour ( communist lying self serving f#ckwitts ) of a government are finally starting to realise it . Ed will be sent to the corner with a pointy hat soon ! Then starmer will take all the credit for SMR s |
Trying to work out the RR mini nuke potential UK market.
Hinkley point C proposed 7-8GW. Cost about £45bn, a record for nuclear power stations. (It will be more that that, this is the UK)
RR mini nuke station about 0.45GW So we would need about 16 RR mini nukes sites to replace Hinkley point.
Presume there are environmental issues and need to access water cooling for RR mini nukes and the usual security issues wrt weapons grade materials. These are huge infrastructure decisions for HMG.
Then there is carbon capture alternatives and a re think about fossil fuels. |
It really isn't rocket science is it Skinny. Start by populating those decommissioned sites where public acceptance is likely to be greater.
One report I read recently puzzled me. It mentioned that the new, large plant being constructed at Hinckley Point on the Severn estuary may be further delayed due to issues with the potential destruction of thousands of tons of fish sucked into the cooling water intake.
Given that most of the sites that have housed large reactors are located at the edge of the sea - for access to water cooling - why hasn't the issue of fish being 'poached' in the cooling water system risen to the surface in the past?
Not wishing to over-egg the puns but it does seem a tad fishy to me. Maybe a clever way to delay by environmentalists? |

A point worth noting , the RR SMR Consortium includes the US company Constellation Energy who would I guess operate the plant, that should keep Trump sweet. hTtps://www.constellationenergy.com/our-work/what-we-do/generation/nuclear.html |
This has really flown since I exited but in again on the SMR news which could be very significant for RR imho. I've extended the long term chart in the header to start from 1997. Fortunately the trolls have now gone, at least for now! |
From memory Australia are taking three subs from the US. RR supply the reactors. |
From a procurement and ongoing operational support prospective it would make sense to install modules of the same design , ie 1x 470MW for Trawsfynydd and 2x 470MW for Wylfa,IMO that would provide the best IRR. |
Wales 2 new nuclear power plants required, Gwynedd 470MW Anglesey 980MW RR 470MW Westinghouse 1000MW and 300MW, What is the value for money report to match the same output..???? |
A reminder also that the list price of a RR Trent engine is approx double that of a narrowbody engine. |
Airbus registered more widebody orders (29) than narrowbody (26) in JanuaryhTTps://www.aviation24.be/manufacturers/airbus/in-january-2025-airbus-registered-55-orders-and-delivered-25-aircraft/#:~:text=Airbus'%20commercial%20aircraft%20orders%20and,have%20been%20published%20as%20below. |
Id absolutely love to think that RR will get a big slice of SMR's, as they rightly should as the home team.
I absolutely would also like to think UK gov will do the right thing, which is no given.
But with the way the orange turnip from across the pond is behaving its a lottery at best there isn't some deal being done on this and tariff's and goodness knows what else. The headlines write themselves XXX billion investment from whoever.....
I've held since 90p, sold a few on the way up, its a free run and then some for me now so a few more months won't hurt. |
