People pooh-pooh Ken Dodd but we went to see him once and it was a bloody marvellous evening. Until midnight when they locked the doors to stop us getting away...

I imagine fear of spontaneous combustion is a help in keeping the vandals at bay?

You can park on the street across the road from Alder Hey for 4 hours no bother. And no it wont get nicked or vandalised. Maybe 4 hours doesn't cut it for your average appt wait time though. Forgot to say that an added bonus is that it's just round the corner from the Ken Dodd Happiness Centre.

the length of time its gone on Im surprised the oligarchs havent tried to install a Gorbachev type figurehead to protect their own rapidly diluting interests, that Wagner 'march' showed just how vulnerable Putin can be

The trouble with Russia is not some great national urge to recreate Greater Russia but that it is run by a mafiosi structure headed by Putin who a) cannot afford to lose the Presidency while he is alive and 2) needs to have a 'cause' to distract attention from the kleptocracy that he runs. The minute either of these fails, he's dead (literally). Ukraine is one man's personal crusade/cause, however much he tries to dress it up. It's hard to see where this goes because the Russians have never known anything but 'strong leaders' (i.e. dictator-types) from the Tsars, through Stalin and subsequent Presidents down to the current one, so if he is deposed, I imagine they'll go for someone else very like him.

As to Russia, seriously, what we've been doing strikes me as incredibly foolhardy, starting with inviting Ukraine to join NATO. How can it be a good idea to taunt and tease the bear? Unless, perhaps, we have reliable intelligence that all their long distance missiles have rusted solid in the last few decades.
